Maxetai, you think that the thai shorts are ugly, you probably think the Muay Thai music is horrible, you probably think the Thai people are morons... and that's great, these are your opinions. My opinion is that you're an idiot. Simply because each art around the world is going to have different traditions and different uniforms and different ways of doing things. You don't judge them and condemn other arts ways of doing things. All you are trying to do is attack the art of muay thai any way you can, and since you can't do it based on how effective it is you do it in this ridiculous fashion.

Sslinky, I will probalby catch aids when the blood from my face is mixing with that of my opponents, more chance of that then from our legs. I have NEVER seen or had my own legs cut, I see fighters faces bleeding all the time during fights though, some VERY bloody. These are the risks of full contact fighting.

Shorts are way more comfortable than long pants, you can even tuck the shorts up further so they are practically not there, I personally prefer shorts.

      http://www.muaythai.com/En/Konmuay/Praramanaosorn.html <---traditional

I think wrapping a coloured belt around your waist while wearing pygamas looks kinda strange but hey dont all drag queens dress up!

By the way, The Thai people are awsome people, in my own western country I can honestly say that there are very few people with the generosity and kindness like that of the many Thais I met and got to know. Seriously, I was in a bit of a predicament in Bangkok and it was the Thais who helped me out of it, no shit man they really helped me out.... I was up shit creek to put it bluntly.

Sure I met many farang but to be honest they care for one thing, money and how cheap they can live for in Thailand while haggling for ridiculously low amounts of money while systematically insulting the Thais with just about every word from there mouth and movement of their hands.... funny really when you think of it. We westerners are very materialistic, The Thais do care for things but in general their lives are not dominated by the shit that turns us into selfish greedy bastards! but you do get the rich Thais but even they are nothing like the rich in western countries.... its just a total different mindset, hell in Laos the humble man is the most respected, humble meaning the skint man with nothing but a roof over hos head. This will change as the western world pollutes Asia with its cares for materialistic shite and love for money.

Thais are very easy going, hey man sure you get some crooks but you get them every where and at least in Thailand they con you with a smile and not a knife in yer back and anyway you have more of a chance of getting done over in a western country than there.

      Is this off topic?

        Damian,
I never said that Thai music is horrible and I don't think that Thai people are morons. You're saying that I do and that is not true.
I find men wearing shorts and stepping into a ring to fight as visually ugly when kicking is involved. I mentioned ThaiBoxing and Low Kick Kickboxing because these styles have "promoted the shorts" more than any other style.
I find Thai Boxing very effective and I train with full time Thai Boxers and have learned a lot from them.
I respect Thai Boxing greatly and would even venture to say that it's one of the best stricking/stand up grappling arts around. Arguably it's the best as far as I'm concerned.

I just find the shorts that men wear and step into a ring to kick as something not so aesthetic.

Hey, tastes differ so Damian and everyone else I respect your taste for the shorts, and of course there are other reasons that you can cite in favor of the shorts over long trousers.
I've expressed my views, you can express yours and leave the personal attacks out of this discussion (this goes directly to you Damian).

Yeah, I agree - that's far more likely.
Cuts on the legs do happen though. I think it was Pele Reid (?) sustained a sizeable gash in his shin in a K-1 fight a few months ago and had to retire. I've seen a few other similar injuries in K-1.

Alright Maxetai, I just figured you for an art basher that was looking for a sneaky way to attack Muay Thai. If you're not that then cool. If you really just don't like the shorts on men heh, understand that this is the uniform, my pyjamas I wear for TKD is also a uniform and just as ridiculous. Arts of the world will have some interesting differences.

Sslinky, ya I'm sure it happens, it's just not as worrying to me as getting my opponents blood from his face on me since my face can easily be cut open with his elbow.

              It's all good Damian Mavis.

So basically it's a matter of what the uniform is to each art and respecting that.
I admit that this makes sense and this is one reason that for the last 10 years I've been training on my own, or with certain individuals or training unofficially at certain schools and gyms.

I was wondering though, do you and others prefer the shorts or simply you accept it because "it's the uniform to wear for this art?"

To say it in another way, if long trousers were worn in Thai Boxing, would you prefer to wear shorts or the issue wouldn't even cross your mind?
And if you practice Kung-Fu, Karate, TKD, etc...would you rather wear shorts and have you expressed this to your teacher?

I'm just curious and not intentionally trying to offend anyone or any art(style) with this discussion. Thanks

It's hard for me to think of Muay Thai in anything other than shorts because that has always been the proper training/fighting attire for that art as long as I've known about it and trained in it. But coming from a background that wears traditional white uniforms like so many other arts, if Muay Thai had a similar uniform I wouldn't have thought twice about it. Once I accept an arts traditions and ways as my own I can't think of changing them.

Also, after training in the intense heat in Thailand I realise it just wouldn't be possible to wear anything else there. You can't even wear a t shirt, it would be soaked through in the first 5 seconds of warmup. Since each arts native country dictates what the uniform is, that's just the way it goes.

Bottom line I've learned to appreciate shorts as I can really see my technique, it's hard to hide bad technique when wearing shorts so it helps me improve.

That's a really good point actually - long trousers often hide bad technique and wearing shorts is a very good way to improve it.

                            Up to the individual fighter.

Damian Mavis you have a point about checking the technique of the fighter/student and that it's much clearer with shorts. Actualy it's a very good point!
What do you say for wearing the Savate suits for the match to look good? Just trying to be funny.

Ya savate uniforms are just plain silly (and a little homoerotic), but hey it's their fighting outfit and who am I to judge them as silly Frenchmen?
