  • Does western boxing simply cross over to MuayThai?

I would think not.....the footwork would need modifying, as would a lot of the rolls and ducking and diving.

The reason I ask is after a bike accident a few months ago, my knee is very weak. Physio said it would be a year before I could train. Well three months on (and after a LOT of hard, and for weeks, unrewarding work) I can manage to runagain. I can use the squat machine, though not quite so heavy as before, and I can kip.

I am worried though that the excess force created in banging it against pads etc, will pull it out of postion more (my patella seperated from the rest o my knee) when kick withit, and likewise the twist it will go thru when kickin with the other leg.

Im thinkin of joinin a boxing club, to keep my hand in,and to improve my punching, and just wondered how the board would think it would need to be adapted much? If so what do you think I should be aware of

at the place i train, they teach us western boxing and muay thai together. our hand skills are western boxing, while our knees, elbows, and kicks are muay thai. they do go together, and i think its way better to learn it this way anway. u have a very efficient and effective system for fighting standing up.

i think u will be surprised and pleased to see what western boxing has to offer. u will also see how easily it can be incorporated into muay thai.

Punching is a big part of 'western' muay thai and increasingly the Thais are becoming more and more profficient. I think western boxing gives the best hand striking skills there are, so yes the punching would transsfer right over to MT.

I guess I should have asked differently. What adaptations wouldbe needed to boxing to make it flow with MuayThai more easily.

I'm thinking mainly of footwork and stance, guard and things?

im not quite sure how to answer ur question since i take em both together and learn to use em as 1.

my stance is basically a boxers stance, howver im more planted than a boxer so i can throw my kicks.this is how they taught us. this also allows my punches to acheive more power since since im planted and i can rotate my hip into the punch well.

in boxing , u learn to duck punches alot, but in kickboxing i dont think they really teach u to do that for fear of getting kneed or kicked when u lower urself. howver, its a good skill because u can duck the punches of a bigger guy very easily and counter to his ribs or uppercut him.

in most cases, ur hand skills will be used most. when i spar, im mostly using my hands, and then slip a kick in when they are distracted by my hands. even if u want to use mostly kicks, u gotta use good hand skills to distract ur opponent enough to use the kicks.

u dont really need to make any adaptatutions, cept for ur stance and were u hold ur hands. the footwork and clinchwork of both arts goes together well. hopefully u will see that u can use em together easily. like for exampl, if u throw a jab and a cross, if u notice when u throw ur cross and ur hand is extended, u are in perfect position to deliver a thai round house kick right after the cross. this is a good example of how to use em together.
