I'm kind of getting an idea of who on these boards is a Fighter, who used to be a fighter, and so on. But is there anyone here who trains Muay Thai just for self defense, just to train, or just for pleasure?

Most of the students at our school train for fun and self-defense. We have and have had a couple of fighters, but the bulk of those at our school only fight each other. Mostly it's sparring, though we occasionally do some ring fights among classmates.
All of the instructors at the school (various styles) have fought full contact, and had the pleasure of having been knocked silly enough to know about it.
I would imagine that most schools in the US have a bulk of people training for fun, not profit. It's a tough decision for people with good paying jobs to risk serious injury for little to no money, ring fighting in the US is mostly for morbid curiousities sake, and for the challenge.
That's my take on it, anyway. Hopefully we'll see some other replies to this with different opinions.

i think you will find that outside of thailand, the majority of people arent in it to get into the ring. some people will try it- I am in february- but it is definitely not something I am going to make a career out of. there simply is not any money in it unless you are really, really good. In fact I think the ONLY fighter in this country who makes enough money to not have a second job is Ray Sefo, and he owns a gym as well.
