All Seminar Proceeds to Benefit Young Cancer Fighter
This seminar will benefit a young American beginning Muay Thai student who has developed a case of bone cancer in his lower shin bone at the age of 14. This has been very hard on him and his family, so ISDC (sponsor of the seminar) has decided to donate all proceeds from the Muay Thai seminar being held at their facility August 28-29, 2005 to the young man.
He is in good spirits now and has been undergoing chemotherapy for the condition. Hopefully he will be present for the seminar. Any other donations for him are welcome and will be presented to him along with 100% of the seminar monies.

Background on Muay Thai Kickboxing
Muay Thai is referred to as "The Science of Eight Limbs,” as the hands, feet, elbows, and knees are all used extensively in this art.
The basic offensive techniques in Muay Thai use fists, elbows, shins, feet, and knees to strike the opponent. Because of the power involved with Muay Thai techniques, fighters do not often block strikes as they do in other martial arts. Fighters prefer to evade attacks by stepping out of range or moving toward their opponent in order to buffer techniques such as kicks.
Stand-up grappling is also used in Muay Thai when fighters enter the clinch. The clinch is applied by holding the opponent either around the neck or around the body. In western boxing, the two fighters are separated when they clinch. But in Muay Thai, fighters are allowed to use a variety of close range attacks in the clinch, including elbows, knees, joint locks and throws.
Muay Thai is also distinguished by its extensive use of elbows and knees as weapons. When Muay Thai boxers fight against other stylists (if they are permitted to use the entire Muay Thai arsenal), their (sok) and knee (kao) techniques give them a distinct advantage.
The Thai low kick and the Thai roundhouse kick are well-known for their effectiveness and many fighters from other martial arts have adopted them: The Thai low kick and the Thai roundhouse kick are actually variations of the same kick, but hit at different heights. At close ranges, the shin is used; at longer ranges, the foot makes contact. The low kick uses a rotational movement of the entire body to hit the opponent's thigh or side of knee. When not properly defended against, this technique often leads to the end of the fight, as the opponent has great difficulty standing after a few powerful low-kicks. The Thai roundhouse kick is also unique and efficiency. Delivered to the ribs or arms, it can break bones. Delivered to the neck or head, it causes unconsciousness.
Techniques in Muay Thai use the power of the entire body. Because of this, and because of the emphasis on footwork, timing, distancing and reaction speed, practitioners of Muay Thai develop great stamina, cardiovascular conditioning, physical coordination, flexibility and overall athleticism.
