Does anyone train or has trained, at the Wat with Phil Nurse? How is it?

Is it common for Muay Thai camps in the US to have some sort of initiation ritual for students? I heard it supposed to take place only on Thursday.

I want to join a camp that still somewhat adheres to the rituals of a traditional camp in Thailand. I just think it adds some integrity to the place, but I can't seem to find any in NY that does.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I honestly don't know of ANY camp in the USA that adheres to the Thursday ritual of "Teacher accepts new Student" (a version of the Wai Kru). That includes the gyms run by Thai's.

I've heard nothing but good things of Kru Phil Nurse. And as a bonus, I understand that Coban may be joining forces with his gym in the coming months. I've never personally trained with Phil, but he and I have met on a few occassions and I've seen his guys fight. Its a very good program.

I train at the Wat in NYC. I've been there since November of 2005. We don't have a "Teacher accepts new Student" ritual, that could have been interesting though. Basically you sign the waiver, take a tour and you're thrown into the pack and I mean this in a very positive way. I was a novice at the time, stepped in and followed the program. The Wat is a full-time Muay Thai gym with western boxing. The classes are divided by experience: total beginner, beginner/intermediate, intermediate, and advanced. There are different classes for pad work, clinch, sparring, fighter fitness, and regular technic classes. That's really what made this place appealing: knowing what class you're stepping into and knowing what to expect or not. They have classes pretty much all day and are open 7 days a week. You should check out their website: http://www.thewat.com. By the way the Wat is a fighting school. Geez, I hope I don't sound like too much of a suckup but it's truly a good place.
