  • Martial art to combine with Muay thai

    hello,

This is my first post and i just wanted to ask a question on combining martial arts.

I have been practising Muay thai for about 6 months and I am loving it. I took it up primarily for self defense purpose but as time goes by Im thinking more and more of trying competitions. My question though relates to self denfense, although i feel Muay thai is great for self defense with guys around my own size and would feel confident in handling my own, But I feel it would be difficult to defend myself against someone of a larger stature (not to hard to be larger by the way as i am only 5'8").

My question is what would be an effective art to combine with muay thai to assist if, god forbid, I should have to defend myself against a larger opponent?

In my area I have classes in Karate, Judo, Kung Fu, TKD, MMA, Jiu Jitsu, Aikido and a bit further a field there is a Krav Maga class.

    I'm appreciative of any info.

    thanks

For self defense purposes, I wouldnt suggest grappling. Grappling is okay one on one but against groups its not so hot. Muay Thai covers boxing and kicks so you it would be smart to combine with a grappling or take down art.

My suggestion, Judo or MMA. Strong takedowns and it does not take as long to become decent at as Aikido does. Aikido takes a long time to master timing and a lot of the stuff relys on grabbing a persons hand in silly ways (you wont be able to catch a punch and then throw him in the movies unless you study for years).

Muaythai works decently against larger fighters. If you hit someone with a well placed elbow or drive a knee into them, they will go down. Personally I've never fought with elbows (for cosmetic reasons) but I have with knees and you can sink even larger fellows.

      I would go with judo.

The reason why? Muaythai covers your stand up striking and also teaches you to strike from the clinch (standing and struggling face to face). Judo picks up from there and teaches you to use your opponents balance against him. They teach ground control, some submissions too, allthough not emphasized as much as Jiujitsu.

wouldn't judo be considered archaic compared to BJJ Tom, or have I just been deluded by all the BJJ McDojo hype?

It depends on the school or instructor in the end. If a judo or jiu-jitsu school trains for sport you'll miss out on good stuff. Alot of BJJ schools don't work takedowns as much as judo.

                  Mma

Wing Chun.... striking (including elbow techniques), takedowns, Dim Mak pressure points are all part of the system. Sticky hands (Chi Sau) is great for sensativity training and I think it would help the MT clinch too. I have trained in it a little before and I want to get back into it after a few years of MT.

So basicly everyone seems to agree that some form of take down/ground work would be a good additions to MT, because that's where it's defficiant. I agree, and I say that a lousy bbj school doesn't stand up to a rockin' Aikido one, even if otherwise the style would balance the other way for quick and effective combat. Scope out those schools and see what they teach and if they're worth your money. That's my 2 Cents.

I always keep a folding chair hidden in my shower in case of home invasion!
