Thai to English translation

My Thai sucks, but I'm pretty sure the Windy shorts (the second picture) say "Muay Thai" I had one of my Thai students (back when I was teaching English) translate an identical pair for me. I can't help you with the first pair though.

I'm not sure about the 1st pair of shorts. These are the team shorts many of Master Chai's guys wear though. The last 1/2 of the script says MuayThai. Just like the 2nd pair of shorts says MuayThai.

The first 5 letters in the 1st pair of shorts is what I'm not sure how to translate. To the best of my knowledge, the individual letters are:

S+M+W(?)+K+M

As you see, I *think* the 3rd letter makes a "W" sound, but I'm not 100% sure. Because there are no vowels between the consonants, the are usually pronouced with an "ah" sound between them.

Sa-Ma-Wa-Ka-Ma

Now, despite the usual "ah" sound you would expect, that *rule* isn't always that case. So the word could read like above, or it could just as easily read something like "smaw-kam".





Above are 2 pics of my own shorts. I want to point out the letter in question that I don't know to show you how it pronounces in the Thai script of my own shorts....

In the 1st pic, on the right leg (on left in picture), you see that the letter "appears" to be the same in question. That word on my shorts is my screenname, "Khun Kao" (pronounced "koon-kow"). Which is what leads me to believe that the letter is a "W" sound.

The same word "Khun Kao" is across the front of the 2nd pair of shorts, but you see the 2nd letter on the leg is "almost" the same, but it has the loop at the bottom. That is the word "MuayThai" and the letter also kinda sounds out the "W" sound. The first three letters are M-W-Y... Which becomes Muay....

Anyway, sorry for the disertation. I got on a roll and I still don't have the answer to your question.... LOL

Dear HKane, you should really know what the letters mean, since they were especially embroided for a purpose. The first one says Sama-kom Muaythai or literally, muaythai association. The second one which is the blue shorts, well any one can see that it says breezy lol. Oops, sorry. It says simply muaythai.
Dear Khunkao, I think your name is spelled quite correctly. khun is most correct, since the vowel sound is short, and the "H" is appropriate. I know that Thais usually address a person politelly with the word khun, but that is not correct. It should be kun. Nevertheless, it has become the accepted spelling. BTW the letters on the left leg say SitSuriya which mean student or related to Suriya camp. The characters on your second shorts are most fancy, and I couldn't read them for a while. I thought they were English made to resemble Thai characters.

RIGHT LEG: "Khun Kao"

FRONT: "Khun Kao"
LEFT LEG: "MuayThai"

I've got all kinds of custom trunks. I actually dislike wearing the ones that simply say "MuayThai" in Thai script across the front because EVERYONE wears them.... LOL. (I'm such an elitist)

My coach, Master K, had those green shorts made for me as a surprise after I won my 1st MuayThai title. His gym is "SuriyaSak", and for a time I was calling my program "SitSuriya" then "SitSuriyaSak". But because of the fact that our program is now teaches a combination of 4 camps methods, we changed our name to "Ayuthaya"....
