MT in Brooklyn?

i'm looking for muay thai classes in brooklyn, preferably downtown but really anything within 40 minutes of the brooklyn bridge is cool.

i found some places but all of them were 150++ a month, which imo is ridiculous. i know that's probably a consequence of living in the city cause everyone is a grimy moneygrubber but.. i'm sure there are some decent souls somewhere
im looking to pay >120 a month for MT classes.

also interested in krav maga in brooklyn, so if anyone happens to view this thread and know about krav in bklyn too - help me out

The only legit MuayThai that I'm aware of within Brooklyn is Borodin's. I'm not saying that there aren't other programs, but that's the only one I've encountered.

Unfortunately, $150 is likely what you're going to pay. It's not "money-grubbing" as you say, it's the fact that NY and the surrounding area is one of the most expensive places to live in the world. That means there's a lot of overhead that needs to be paid to keep the gyms doors open.

I'm not familiar with the mileage, but name some other areas that you can reach.... For instance, Manhatten? Valley Stream? Queens? There are some other really good MuayThai programs in and around the city, and you may be able to find a deal....

other non-UFC martial arts are usually under 100, these guys are taking advantage of what's popular now and raising the prices. money grubbing in my opinion

i can go into manhattan, but it's a big borough and i'm not really interested in traveling an hour both ways for a 1 hour class

I don't know where you are in Brooklyn, but the Wat and 5 points are both within 1.5 blocks of the Canal St. 4/5/6 and N/Q/R/W subway stations. If the ride to Canal isn't too long for you, check them out.

what is the Wat? i live right on the edge of brooklyn (high street on the A) so canal is pretty close.

Yeah non UFC like little karate studio's... You need a lot of space to have a ring and lots of heavy bags, speedbags, area to shadow box. Non ufc type places don't need this, they rent a hole in the wall and throw down some walmart puzzle mats. The gym I am building is 3000 sq ft. lease alone is going to cost me $2000(I'm not in NY) a month plus utilities, plus insurance. Need to pay trainers to hold pads. It's not one person teaching a karate class. lol WOW. Just WOW You have no clue. Ring $4000+ Octagon $15,000 1500 sq feet of (good) mat to grapple on $5000, bags, gloves, headgear, etc $3000.

I'm not trying to be an ass but trust me they are not getting rich. Most likely breaking even and working a day job to make real money. I know I will be lucky to break even but whatever doing it so people in my area can have a quality place to train. It's your money but in the end you get what you pay for.

the "little karate studios" usually have much less students, whereas a gym such as the one you described should have loads more.

not to mention most of these places that cost 150, 200, ++, dont have octagons, most just have old rings and old instructors.

Nothing wrong with an old instructor. We have a local boxing coach who is in his 70's, it's unbelievable how much knowledge the guy has.

Best thing to do is try each place and then decide. Just realize a full contact MMA gym will 99.99% of the time cost more than karate type studios. Just the nature of the beast.

well yeah for sure a gym is going to cost more than your local Kung Fu rented-studio, but some of the places are outrageous in what they require you to purchase, some having year long contracts (call it what you want..imo that's aiming for my pockets)..it's somewhat ridiculous.
