Now does this have the potential to be more harm than good? I know the overwhelming opinion on shin conditioning (lol...I thought I'd put this WAY behind me by now) is to just kick a bag...but I've had varied opinions from instructors (competent and acomplished ones) that have varied to include shin rolling...

What is the reality of using something like this...ARE there REALLY long term risks associated with it...or is it simply not going to include all of the benefits of kicking a bag?

Just wanted to gather some other people's opinions before I make a purchase.

    Thanks, G.

I personally believe those things actually do more harm than good. Proper shin conditioning includes IMPACT training. It's not just a matter of desensitizing your shins to contact. The impact of kicking the heavy bag actually causes your bone to become more dense as well.

I think we've all seen quite enough of those "shin break" videos.... don't you?

Conditioning of any kind, takes time and should be allowed to develop in increments. The rush to make it happen results in undue damage and injury. Theres no shortcuts to it, thats something I learned myself personally. I dont think you need the krushin or anything like it.

you dont feel the shins clash when you fight much.
you dont have to do much more than kick the bag and it does make a big difference just kicking the bag as to how much it hurts after. therefore bag is enough if done on a very regular basis.

Ghosts right you dont feel the shins much when you fight, and if someones isnt going to fight regularly then you definatly dont need to do any other shin conditioning than hitting the bags and the pads.

Having said that over the years ive done the lot to my shins(didnt know any better and was young and daft!) ive kicked sand bags full power, rolled them with a rolling pin,a stick,a coke bottle filled with sand, ive tapped them with wood, ive even kicked trees! and im not talking banana trees! but oak etc(only light taps mind),also ive shin blocked full power kicks with my equally mad friend and training partner until when the bruises came up on my shins there was no white skin left to see on them and i couldnt even put a bed sheet on them without being in pain.

Anyway the reason ive said this is just that i appear to have no adverse effects after more than 25 years of using my shins on things,i stopped doing all the rolling etc on them many years ago mind, and i understand why people think about doing heavy conditioning on their shins.

I advise my students only to kick the heavy bags and good pads, learn to take the bone on bone contact in light sparring with no pads,i really do think thats all the conditioning you need.

Oh and develop a good tiip!.
