  • WOULD YOU TRAIN HERE???

ok so most of you guys probably know now that I am new to Muay Thai, there are only two schools in Houston, thats I know of so far, that teach MT.

I went to the first class tonight (to see if i liked this school)....from 6:00-6:45 he sparred with his students (optional part of the class. class officially starts at 6:45) anyway he let them puch him but that was it (no kick, elbow, etc..)and they were able to open up on him but he didnt go all out on them, one looked like he had a little exp nothing much but the other was in training to go to some tough man tournament and looked like he had been training for a while.

ok so class starts and he has a total of 3 students, usually he has 8, one was a fine asian girl, but thats beside the point, but damn was she hot....anyway the class went till 8 and what he did was went over jabs, right cross, uppercut, and ducking....basicly he held up his pads walked in a circle and yelled what hit he wanted and they executed, then he would swing at them and they would duck....

so that was the class....here is the money part 60 app fee and then i have to pay for 4 months up front so 87 x 4 (three class a week 1.5 each) so a total of around 450, after that its 87 a month.

oh and hes said that he also does not teach any of the "fancy moves" like spinning kicks or punches...he said baislcy any move that will expose your back to your opponent he didnt teach...

ok so guys what do you think about the class and the money and everything...thanks again for your help

    ---------------------
dont know for sure but the other school i think teaches some mixed martial arts style that i guess uses some muay thai moves...have to check that for sure, but what do you think of that, ....incorporate good? or all muay thai

Is $87 a month a fair bit? I pay around $88 a month but thats in Aussie Dollars, so its about $50 in your currency.

Perhaps you should check out when he has 8 students (average you say).

You also say 3 classes a week, 1.5 hours a week, you also said he offers sparing before classes? is that part of the fee or is that an option (that costs additional money).

I don't see anything wrong with him in my opinion, but then again you better ask someone that has done muay thai.

sparring is NOT and extra fee...and he never knows when he will have a full class, sometime his students show up and some times they dont

A real muay thai class should be ran like one..

we follow the fight bell.. if it's running u should be doing something.

when it hits break.. u rest for those 30 secs..

        i come in..

stretch... using that stretcher.. using the ladder.. few stretching devices..

do squats... knee lifts for balance... squat n lean on the wall.. and hold that position.. basically we call it sit on the toilet.. it is hard to do... but good for ur legs..

        do that for 2 rounds..

then jump rope for 3 rounds...

then i shadow box for 3 rounds..

then i hit the bag for 6 rounds..

then the go in the ring and spar..

then go back with the teacher for 3 rounds of gruling, painful, aganizing muay thai pad work.. working on techniques..new moves.. killing me!!!

then when i crawl out of the ring.. sweating .. and powerless..

i do legs lefts.. and work on sit ups and medicine ball..

if i have time i'll watch some muay thai tapes.. and chilll..

        and i'm done..

it's not easy but its tight..

and he said in thai land when he was a fighter it was 5 times more work

        HOW??!!!

        LOL...

Hey Crazyjoe, what city do you train in?

Holte2, what you're describing sounds like a very basic or conservative version of a Muay Thai type of gym. Maybe he's just getting started and all the people there have never trained before.

It sounds too watered down for my taste but it's hard to say without being there. You have to weigh for yourself weather or not what you think you could get out of this place is worth you time and money. If the other place is doing more mixed martial arts stuff and it's more intense than that's where my vote would probably go.

Check out the other place, it sounds like you're not really into this one.

            If you're not huffing

for air after a MT class, something is wrong. There should be jump rope or footwork as well as high intensity movements (jab or kick the bag as many times as you can in 1 minute).

As far as the 'fancy moves' , I think you're instructor knows what he's talking about; spinning attacks are very risky.

What exactly are your goals? Fitness, competition, self-defense?

IT should be noted that conventional Muay Thai training is too rigorous for some people- especially when it's just a hobby (not competing).

Maybe you're in a class of beginners. Ask for something more strenuous if that's what you want.

$87 a month is way too much for 3 muay thai classes a week, I pay 55 dollars a month for 6 days a week that includes grappling classes and a cardio and weight room and a ring for sparring, I can go to classes for an hour at lunch, and 4 hours a night during the week, and a few hours on saturday. I agree with the spinning techniques, so he sounds combat oriented, but beside that, I'd definately check the mma place. The mixed martial art place I train at, charges alot more, with hella less equipment, but the trainer has a wealth of knowledge that I'm willing to pay for. If you have a limited amount of gyms to choose from, sometimes you might have to pay more for less, but I'd definately look around. Check out some of the other places in your city, you might find that some advertise one system, but the instructor might have different systems he will teach as well. Remember also, if an instructor sees heart and natural ability, he's more apt to give you a little special attention. By checking most gyms "free class", you'll eventually find the one thats right for what you want.

                      Sup Holte,

I would probably train there. The school doesn't seem that bad. $87 a month for 3 times a week is decent. Paying 4 months in advance shouldn't be a problem if you really like the school. It's not like you're gonna train for a month or 2 then quit. If that is the case, might as well not join. $60 for the initiation fee aint that bad either. All these fees and paying in advance is because the instructor needs to make a living also. I'm guessing he wants his students to be dedicated and really serious about training. Otherwise, you are just wasting your time and his. By the way, having a fine asian gurl in the class is also a plus. It will motivate you to show up to every class. Also, you will spar better when shes watching lol. Oh yeah, fancy moves are in tkd, not muay thai. But it is good to learn some such as the spinning round house. Don't go too far and try doing jump spinning kicks in the ring. Anyways, hope this helps and good luck on your training.

The mma class is designed for those that wish to train for competition in UFC style events. Not all the participants in the class compete.

The best days to come by would be Monday, Wednesday or Thursday. You can train up to 6 days per week.

Go to http://www.defend.net/ and look at the menu on the right that says School. Click the appropriate link to find the location, schedule and prices.

I run the Houston Branch...not for all of America.
