  • sparring with females?!

i dont mean any offence, but i haven't heard of any fights between a male and female nor a spar.... from others experiences. have anybody did this yet? got ass kicked by her? or by nature did you take it easy on her? i would love to fight a female one day (maybe take her out too!).... and that i wouldn't underesimate them! unfortunately, there aren't any females in my class.. and i guess, none will be brave enough to join yet... cos we are filled with lots of guys

hey, there are females in my class and they spar with anybody they like, male or female. They do know that if they go with a male student that they will be different to sparring with a female. If a male student takes it out on a female student (or the other way round) then the instructor will kick ur a$$. But to be honest we dont take it out on anyone. Sometimes the females technique may be better than a males because we concentrate on power??? duno tho, just a suggestion.

i have one girl in my BJJ class and i've sparred with her a number of times. I win everytime not because i'm any more skilled than she is (she's been going a lot longer than i have) but only because i'm bigger than her. i can't say i've noticed anything different when i wrestle with her except that i occasionally gag on her hair. 0_o

To respond to this question from a female point of view. I am a 28 year old female who has been studying Atienza Kali for two years. One part of their training includes a sparring exercise which they refer to as Blade Simulator. We use padded sticks, training knives and on occasion spar with rattan sticks. Because the majority of martial artists are male, I have had my share of bumps and bruises. In my opinion, female martial artists will always have physical disadvantages against a male. We have to fight smarter and be on right on que with form, technique and targeting. I also believe that when sparring a woman you should really think about how much you are holding back on her and will this help her or hurt her? A way to improve as a fighter is to learn from mistakes in sparring exercises. It also gives me motivation to train harder.

A blade is a great equalizer.

One of my former Kali instructors used to joke: "Sure, I'll fight Mike Tyson, as long as I get to bring a knife."

I always go easier on girls for some reason. I'm just not the kind of person who likes to spar women...mainly because I don't want to fight women and dont' plan on it. -shrugs- But that's just me.

you may not plan on fighting them, but think of the experience they gain by sparring with a male as opposed to another female.

Not many girls in our gym. But one of them spars quite a lot with the guys since she's a serious amateur fighter.

Obviously we dont go all out on her and beat her to a pulp. Basically we can put pressure on her, connect moderately but no excessive power.

But this chick is VICIOUS. Im more worried about sparring with her than with my heavy/cruiserweight buddies. We're all amateurs in our gym. We've all fought before. But in terms of raw talent Id reckon she outdoes us. she kicks major ass in tournaments mainly due to the experience she gets from sparring with the guys in the gym.

Well thats MY experience of sparring with a female... and we've taken many LOW-blows when she's not getting her way in the ring.

thanks for the replies... it all sounds interesting, as i stated earlier that i have never spar with a female before. but when in normal situations outside the gym/club, when females gets mad i would hold back and when she hits me. but i reckon, i would hit back if i am hurt badly. btw, i am only 170cm (5'6) at 63KG.

i agree with that, if a woman came at me with the intent to seriously hurt me I wouldn't hold anything back. Of course, if she were to just get mad and try to slap me or something i'd just block it and walk away.

The only time I have ever held back on a woman is if I hurt her. The same goes for men. If you are training a woman, then train her.
By holding back you're training her unrealistically. When she really needs to use what she knows against someone who is giving all they have...she will be in a new world of pain, because that is the first time she has ever been on the receiving end of a vicious blow...and that is the wrong time for that.
I have given women bruises and concusions, and they will beat the crap out of guys their size because I did not take it easy on them.
If you're taking it easy on a woman who is training, then that is not a moral decision not to hurt a weaker person, but your ego not wanting to get hurt if she actually does get the better of you.

Excellent point. My Guro is also my husband. I receive the most rigorous training and he rarely holds back on me. He is trying to prepare me for any violent situation I may encounter on the street. Anyone I train with is not going to be there if some scumbag tries to rape or beat me. I believe it is also training partners jobs to help me prepare for this situation.

                            i spar with the guys

i am 14, female and the rest of my class is male 20 and above(and the lghtest one only weighs 10 pounds more than me, the rest are 60pounds more than me) i am just a yellow belt and they are mostly brown(promoting to black on jan25) one black and two yellow belts, they spar with me and treat me no different they know that i am serious and pay attention as to not get hurt. sure they lay me out but always make sure i am ok, and of course i lay them out sometimes. i've come along way in my class and they respect me enough to give me a fair work out. they are some of the best guys ive ever met and not only do they "play" fair with me but if i need help or want to know that cool move they just did on me they are always glad to help

I agree fully. Though our girl fighters are prepared to take it. We're prepared to give it, cos we know its for the best in the long run...

...but its coaches orders. So yeah.
