  • Some funny discussion

A couple of days ago, I started an on-line discussion with someone in South Corea.

I started off by saying that when UFC (and other MMA tournament) came out for the first time, there were so many traditional martial artists who had spoken highly of themselves (AND their fighting styles) and then got brutally beat up by BJJ masters, Thai boxers, and some submission fighters in the Octagon.

This guy's reaction was FUNNY! He strongly argued that those who got beat up in the MMA tournaments were not "GREAT" martial artists. He also added that true Martail Artists, who have trained for many decades(specifically, Kung Fu masters and other Traditional martial artists), do not usually participate in MMA tournaments because they don't feel like hurting anyone badly with their "SUPER" skills.

In other words, those TRUE traditonal artists can beat up MMA fighters or Thai Boxers with one deadly strike.

I said to myself, "oh, man! This guy seriously lacks a sense of reality..." and decided to end the discussion immediately because I have talked with someone like this on the same topic before.

When I was about to leave, this guy kept running his mouth: "I have seen many traditional martial artists who have trained for decades... They are 60 yrs old (or older) but still kick some 20/30-yr-old fighters' @ss."

I laughed my head off at that time... How many times have we heard the same story (a 60-yr-old master beating up a 20/30-year-old fighter) so far?

Yeah, I know the story is true. But all I can say is that, it's a shame you got your ass kicked by an old man. And I really wish they could come up with a new story because this "60-yr-old guy" thing is really getting old. Have the 60-yr-old masters fought 20/30-yr-old Thai boxers/MMA fighters.... EVER? I'm willing to pay $800 just to see the Super master V.S. Jerome Le Banner/Tito Ortiz.

Man, I felt bad after the discussion because I wasted my precious time just to hear some stupid jokes.

    Your thoughts on this?

I see what you mean. There are old guys that can still kick butt. Take Bill "Superfoot" Wallace; I think he's in his late 50's or early 60's, but have you seen any of his videos? He can kick from any angle, any time with KO power. He's a skilled enough fighter that he would try to keep you in kicking range. Also George Foreman. I think he knocked out WBF heavyweight champ Moore (?) in the late 80's to regain the crown; he was like 46 at the time. How about 'Judo' Gene Labell? I would not want to grapple against this guy. He doesn't participate in MMA but he actively teaches. His style seems to be a combination of wrestling/judo but he teaches 'dirty moves' too. He has worked with some BJJ fighters and they exchange techniques.

Could any of these guys beat Tito? It depends on the rules I guess. No doubt that he's a better physical specimen though.

"my kung fu master is 90 years old and he can kill the UFC champion in one deadly strike... but he doesn't want to"

you cant argue with someone who belives something like this

they will always think up some excuse as to why their kung fu super master doesn't want to fight

if you attack the master and beat him up with a baseball bat they'll say "he was secretly blocking and only pretending to bleed. if he had hit back you would have almost certainly died"

        ignorance is bliss

My Muay Thai instructor is 65 years old now. But, the last time I sparred with him (full contact, Boxing only) was in 1998, when he was 60. I was 28 years old at the time. I had been training at a Boxing Gym for a few months brushing up on my hand skills, and also trying to shop around for some Golden Gloves or USA Boxing matches.

I came to his Muay Thai class, and he challenged me to spar because he wanted to see how my skills had progressed. I am 6 feet tall, and weighed in at 170 lbs at the time. He is about 5'4", and weighs about 130 lbs. During the match, I was able to work his body 'ok'. When he would punch, I was able to use my greater reach to my advantage, and was working him in the ribs. But, after he figured my strategy, he started timing my punches and caught me with an overhand left.

If he had not been standing so close to me (due to size difference) to land his punch, I would have fallen right onto my face. I fell against him and he ended up inadvertantly holding me up. That effectively ended the match. He did admit that I had done a really good job working his body, and his ribs were really sore. I enjoyed the compliment, while at the same time being upset with myself for not protecting myself better.

Moral of this story: Don't underestimate the old guys.

I've been training under Master K since '92. We originally trained in Fairfax, VA, but then moved out of the TKD dojo and started training at his sisters house, and then his daughters house in Springfield, VA.

Were you at the last Battlegrounds in Bergenfield? I was working the corner for Master K's fighters...

Can you awnser these questions please:

It says on Master K's site that he had "75 fights before he retired" as i thought this was quite low for a Thaiboxer from Thailand.

Im not disrespecting the guy as im sure he is a fantastic Instructor/Fighter, im only going on what i generally heard & thought that the usual fight record of a Thaiboxer from Thailand goes into the hundred's?

Also in the fights pictures the fighters wear differing amounts of protection & some none, is this because of different rules due to amature bouts or the governing bodies of states?

Anybody not seen the site i recommend that it's definitely worth a look.
