  • Online Muay Thai Textbook

So, it turns out that I am apparantly a contributing author to what appears to be an online Muay Thai textbook. I am listed as a contributing author, and quite a lot of my personal writings are included within the manuscript, word-for-word.

But I was never consulted regarding it. I don't know who put this manuscript together, or even who the other contributing authors are (they are listed, I just don't know them).

Don't get me wrong, I'm honored that someone has felt that my articles on Muay Thai are worth being put together into a book with other noted authors, but I didn't have any say regarding which articles of mine would be used, how they would be used, etc. Some of my articles that were used are quite old, and I would have liked to have the chance to rewrite them and/or update them with better (or more correct) information. I am also wondering if any money is being made off of this book. If so, then I want my share!

      LOL

No. I included the URL's so that you CAN download it. But if anyone is PAYING for it, then I'm going to be a little bitter.

well i looked & it's very impressive, i like the old style traditional pic's.
incidentally these look like the tech's our instructor uses (some old style not used so much now)

Yeah, I printed a copy out for myself, and plan on reviewing all of it to see if there is stuff that I can apply to our training.

Again, I just wish I had been consulted regarding this. I really would have liked to have been included in the decision making of this project and have a say regarding what material of mine was used. A lot of my stuff is old. I've learned better & more effecient stuff since I wrote a lot of that.

Nice stuff! You don’t see a lot of techniques being taught or used like this in the U.S.

Well Khun kao you can never say you haven’t been published. Honestly I would be flattered if someone used my stuff but very pissed if they didn’t ask first.

I've been published before. I "ghost wrote" the book, "Muay Thai, the Art of Eight Limbs" for my instructor, Master K. I'm not credited, but he and I had that understanding from the get-go, that the credit would be his. (I got my training for free because of that)

Have you read this draft fully?

i dont understand the hand wrapping chapter as the 3 versions look the same?

i just spent 2 days printing a high quality version & the dam things cost me about £25, pity you hadn't had a word in it being published as i'd buy it!!! (did you post it in retaliation LOL).

some of the text sounds like it came straight off a forum e.g. page 182.

where did you originally find out about the book as the only place i traced it to was a russian site?

iv'e learnt cultural facts from this book i never new or forgot.

"Have you read this draft fully?"

                        Yes

"i dont understand the hand wrapping chapter as the 3 versions look the same?"

The differences between the 3 are so subtle that I'm not really sure why they felt the need to post all three.

"i just spent 2 days printing a high quality version & the dam things cost me about £25, pity you hadn't had a word in it being published as i'd buy it!!! (did you post it in retaliation LOL)."

Stay tuned... I am *finally* getting off of my ass to write and release my own Muay Thai book. Though this project will take me awhile, I will *definately* keep you posted!

"some of the text sounds like it came straight off a forum e.g. page 182."

My point exactly! ALL of the material of mine was taken directly off of internet martial arts forums, such as rec.martial-arts, mma.tv, kungfulonline.com, and Stickgrapplers site. Also, some of my stuff was editted in ways that I'm not exactly pleased with.

"where did you originally find out about the book as the only place i traced it to was a russian site?"

Sounds silly, but I did a Google search on my screen name and came across the link. I do that from time-to-time and occassionally find out what other people are saying about me... LOL

"iv'e learnt cultural facts from this book i never new or forgot."

I've learned, or refreshed my memory on a number of items, too. For instance, I've come to realize that most of the stuff in Chapter 3 is all stuff that I know, with a few exceptions (the flying butt-smach, and the diving punch & headbutt come to mind). It was interesting reading this stuff because even though much of it looks odd at first (its presented in a non-ring Muay Thai fashion), I realize that I was taught all of this stuff, though the ring version...

The section on Muay Thai's history kicks ASS!!!!

"The section on Muay Thai's history kicks ASS!!!!"

Yes, i ment to ask you a question about this as it talks of the thai fighting & how it was adapted through time but it only mentions the striking & none of the wrestling but on page 10 the fight between Muen Han & the Foreigner it says about the thai almost being beaten by the Foreigner's Wrestling of the Neck & Collarbone's so after this fight is this when neck wrestling was incorporated into the curriculum or just a coincedence that it was mentioned?

                          And

In the book between 1910-1934 the creation of a Ring & eventually the internationally recognised Ring was made so my question is when the thai's were stationed in france in the first world war did this have any influence on the creation of the Ring or did they create it without outside help, (western boxing etc...) or did it come from other cultures?

                          Thanx for the replies!!!

You have to understand that Thai history is not what I was really schooled in. I don't fully understand exactly how Muay Thai developed into what it has become today. The section in the book you and I are both reading is one of the most detailed accounts I have found.

The only thing I can add regarding wrestling technique is that supposedly Thai boxing, or a version of it, closely resembled todays MMA fighting and was referred to as Muay Chao Cher.

I don't know what outside/foreign influences led to Muay Thai becoming an official ring sport.
