  • Your Muay Thai/Boxing Check up

    Ever stop to do a diagnostic check on your skills? I watched myself very closely while shadow boxing/kicking and took notes on things that I need to work on. Does one of the following apply to you?

    1. "My Round/Cut kicks are hard; push kicks are strong but my foot work, mobility and hand speed are lacking?"

    2. "My techniques are hard/powerful, but a little slow"

    3. "My techniques are fast but not hard/powerful"

    4. "My punches and kicks are fast and hard, but I am weak in the clinch"

    5. "I can get the clinch and work from there, but I get hit alot/freeze up going into the clinch"

    Yes. Invaluable.

    Currently I rate myself on a 10 point scale for attributes and a 5 point scale for skills. I do not recognize techniques.

      Building attributes doesn't transfer over 100% for me - I have to also work on the skill set and the desired attribute.

        I wont annoy everybody in the forum, or show myself up to be the most newbie ever, by asking someone to explain the clinch to me but would someone point me in the direction of a web site that explains/illustrates it? it would be much appreciated.

        Would I be right to assume "kick boxing" is kind of imbetween boxing and muay thai??

        sorry for all the questions people, maybe one day i be able to answer somebody's questions for a change!!

          I would have to respond to number 5, as being my fighting defect. In my last fight I got in the clinch with my opponent and he did not throw me around and I controlled (or at least he did not control me), but he kept on kneeing and being active-thus gaining points on the judges card. My problem is I don't knee enough in the clinch. I tend to move my hands and body a lot and when an opening occurs I'll throw one (and only one) knee. I am kind've scared to knee a lot in the because I am afraid it will throw me off

            Hi Jonbid, saying kickboxing is between boxing and Muay Thai is a pretty good anology. Simple but good. Kickboxing has the hand techniques of boxing AND the kicks while Muay Thai has all that and knees and elbows along with stand up grappling and even a few throws.

            The clinch is like stand up grappling with one fighter having a dominant position by having his arms locked around the neck of his opponent and able to knee more effectively because of his superior positioning. Both fighters will struggle to get the superior position so often it comes out somewhat neutral with the better fighter able to land more knees and possibly throws from various arm positions. I'm sure someone could explain it better than me but that is basically it.

                I think I'm a wee bit guilty of number 2, I tend to move around and not hit as much as I should either...

                  Hey Dave, long time no see mate!

                  I've known some guys in the amateur level that can swing a hard thai kick and throw a KO right cross, but you can see it coming a mile away - #2

                  Likewise in boxing, the guys who win on points are quick but not hard hitters - #3
