LOL, who knows. I used to wear my Birks with socks until a martial artist I really really really respect told me that it made me look like a hippie and that's part of my problem. So I immediately went out and bought Merrell's, okay so maybe some hippies wear Merrell's but I know three warrior guys (two of the three are cops) who wear 'em to. So when I was sitting at the laundromat and the guy drinking straight Everclear decided to talk at me for a long time, he started with, "Hey, you're wearing Merrell's! You must be from California! I may look like a bum, but I know how to walk in them Merrell's!" It cracked me up because I specifically bought those shoes to get him not to talk to me. I'm not entirely convinced clothing matters, though. Did an experiment a couple times when I ran errands in a tight tanktop and short skirt and didn't get more attention... Well more people looked at me but they also turned away a lot quicker. The muggability report says it's all about body language, posture, etc. But... I have a feeling there's more going on.
I think eye contact is just a normal part of everday life. For as long as I can remember I have always been told to look a person directly in the eyes. To not do so shows a sign of lack of respect. If someones going to be a jerk about it thats their problem. You cant please everyone. In crowds its a bit different, for me at least. I'll avoid looking at someones eyes, and try to look through their eyes. That way I can use peripheril vision and see their whole body and the people around them. I dont stare, unless by accident, and then apologize for zoning out. People can tell if you're trying to start something or if you're just looking around at things. If someones going to start trouble with you just because you looked in their direction, dont worry about if you sent the wrong signals...that guys being a jerk and needs to stop. He is the one being rude.
