A knife that cannot be used for utility purposes without voiding the warranty? That's pure garbage. You mean to tell me that they cannot guarantee their product under the rigors of opening boxes and cutting packaging string, but they still expect me to trust my life to it against an angry assailant?

the civilian is not meant to be used for anything other than self defense. it was created for DEA agents.

the reason you cannot use it for utilitu purpouses is because the tip of the civilian is very thin, and very easy to break. the knife was designed to be delivered as one big ripping slash by dea agents who were not able to carry guns undercover. the slash across the opponents body is likely to bend or break the civilains tip it it hits bones.

the shorter one that i have, the harpy can be used for utility and sd as its smaller, but the tip is solid.

and btw, spyderco is awesome. Sal, the guy who created spydero posts on bladeforums all the time. he is quite a standup guy, and really interacts and listens to his customers.

i picked up one of these today.......looks like it would absolutely great for "destructions"....

a small, simple, affordable pocket knife like this could really go a long way in a bad situation. some people dont like to carry pocket knives because they fear the reactions of some of the people they may carry it around, like workers etc....but i say always carry a decent blade. we must take care of ourselves.

i read a story not too long ago on bladeforums were some guy saved his dog from getting killed by a pit by using a similar blade to slice open the dogs back, cause it to run away. who knows what can happen.

...I hate the dodo's locking mechanism a little bit more. Those fucking ball things are worse than the goddamned wheel lock things...which suck my nuts.

they have an advantage, as they allow the blade to be flicked out fast, easily, and smoothly.

I'd say
#1- a brain (situational awareness, conflict resolution skills)
#2- good reflexes to external stimuli; the ability to flip on "intent" quick.
#3- a visable gun, which acts like a deterrent to shit starting.
#4- a good knife, like the Spyderco P'kal, which is now my personal favorite, which'll probably be more economical and efficient at the range we're talking about.

Unfortunately, most people lack either one or two...which make 3 and 4 less effective.

remember all fights start before the first strike, if i were to carry any weapon, it'd be persuasive speach, attempt to escape from a fight. my personal rule is: Ask them once to leave you alone. then make eye contact, and says, please i dont want to fight you. then make an excuse if they still persist. and the fourth time. destroy them without mercy. or. if your feeling rather combative like i always am lol, give them 1 warning. if they persist... give them the works...

It's actually a really efficient blade design, too. The acute tip angle means it'll still thrust well, but the big belly means a much larger/longer cutting edge in the same length knife. Keeping the ogive of the belly back near the half-way point means that the steeper blade angle near the tip will allow the sharpened edge to assist in thrusting, instead of just relying on "pointy-ness," and the the deeply curved belly allows the knife itself to drag its way through meat (or whatever) on slashes and cuts.

There are better designs for stabbing, and better designs for slashing, but very few types of blade geometry as as well balanced for doing both.

yeah i like the blade shape a lot too. even though it looks different, its pretty functional. ken onion is one of their main designers, i think the fact that he used to be an aeronautical engineer is part of the reason he is able to create such good functional designs. that particular knife is an assisted opener too. kershaw has been making a lot of good blades as of late.
