Big Knife

I’m looking for a knife to take with me for camping and fishing…I’ve seen some scary @ss sh!t out there. I’ve been looking for the “perfect” big knife for a long time and no I’ve been thinking about this long before Mike’s survival class post Besides, he won’t let us carry knives….crazy fucker….


These are some knifes I’ve been looking at but, I can’t decide which one to get. Make sure you check out the links and vids (those of you who don’t already have the dvd). What I want is the longest and lightest blade possible. Cutting is not enough for the knife I want; I want to be able to lop something off. Outside of these knives do you guys have any ideas?

Buy the hype!

.....Through all this reading and researching, I have learned some new things about edges, sharpening, proprietary steels and of course, MARKETING!

I was looking into the Trail Masters series: .... and was trying to understand the differences between the two types, the CarbonV and the San Mai III. I looked up the steels in their FAQ section. Both are made by Cold Steel for Cold Steel. Big secret formula or something... what it kinda says to me is "you don't get to know what's in it or how it's made, just trust us, it's great!" So, the CarbonV model is $199.99, and the San Mai III is $449.99!!!!! Wow! I guess Cold Steel thinks that San Mai III is the s**t!

....You really have to read the fine print when shopping for a blade.

I'm thinking it's a lot of HYPE! They tell you san mai is three layers of steel with the hard (high carbon) steel in the middle of two softer steel layers. They tell you it's stainless steel but that's about it. PHUI!

For that kind of money you can buy a darn good handmade custom made of the steel of your choice and sharpen it with whatever edge you like.

It's just a marketing scheme to break into the custom PRICE range with production lines that share the features of some exotic blade makers.


I'm not buying it! I'll stick with real custom blades.

hideaway knives

Been lurking for awhile, but this is my first post.

I am curious to know what some of you knife aficionados think of hideaway knives www.hideawayknife.com .

I bought one awhile back as a backup knife for one of the folders I routinely carry, and love it. I only bought the 440C utility knife, as I wasn't sure I'd like the concept, but am going to step up and buy one of the customs (leaning towards the James Coogler design).

I would really like Boarspear's take on the knife, but don't want to piss him off on my first post. Thanks,
