I train in MT and Hapkido. Our MT club is holding it's end of year Fight Night this Friday and last night I was asking people at our Hapkido club if they wanted to come along. It's a good deal too as there are 19 fights on the card mostly MT with a couple of MMA fights as well and for only NZ$20.00 (US$12-13.00).
The looks and questions I got were unbelievable.
One guy, who seems to be taking an incredibly long time to get his head around the fact that styles such as MT, boxing etc are excellent self defence styles and very practical, flat out refused to know anything about it. He also trains in Tai Chi (I have nothing against Tai Chi) and he still seems to think if he sticks with that then he will develop the incredible power that those practitioners supposedly have and scoff at the other "harder" styles of training
. Each to his own I suppose but he still gets owned whenever we spar.
Another guy was, seriously, asking me if it was some sort of underground fighting circuit. What the ****!!!!
I honestly couldn't believe this guy! I didn't know how to respond except laugh at him. An amateur fight night, advertised about the place with posters and being held at a reputable boxing hall and this idiot thought it was an underground fighting circuit! Come back into the real world my friend!!
It's 2006 and there are still people running around in their black pyjamas pretending to be ninja's, people who still believe that if they practice slow techniques for decades they will become invincible, people who still believe that MA movies depict actual street fighting, and people who still believe that what they see on TV must be reality. Does the public have a good accurate, impression of the MA's?? Certainly some of it's practioners don't
.
I'm probably just having a whinge, but can anybody else share similar stories or experiences??
