whats ironic is how when i mentioned that i like to keep away from bad places and shady people, you pipe up and talk about how i lock myself up and hide from the world. now you are trying to badmouth me for trying to keep myself safe? isnt that the entire purpose behind the training you have been ranting about this whole time? to keep yourself safe? so how are you going to come on this forum and tell people what you do is best for staying safe, then badmouth someone for wanting to be safe? i dont get you guys. either you guys are extreme trolls, or just utter morons. id really like to think better of you guys, but your posts are full of contradictions and hypocritical statements.

Originally posted by Uke View PostHiding yourself from the rest of the world does not qualify as de-escalation of violence. Violence happens at malls, movie theaters, amusement parks, grocery stores, parking lots, streets due to road rage, etc. You can pretend that you've acquired some skill by not having gotten into a fight, but what it really means is that all your talk about what you could or would do is theory.
Some kinds of violence are avoidable by either not being there or walking away. If someone provokes you, do the right thing- walk away. That's a situation you can avoid.
You don't have to convince anyone of anything.
I look at guys like some of my boxing and muaythai instructors and I could never tell that they've got knockout power in their fists or their feet based on how big or mean they 'look'...same with people on the street. You don't know what they know or what they carry.
If you saw someon like a clean-cut Roberto Duran or Ramon Dekkers wearing every day clothes on the street, you might think you could walk on them because they aren't huge nor mean looking......but then there's guys like Kurt Angle who are huge, mean looking and capable.
Even Mike B, looks a little like a beefy David Hasslehof, but I know the man can put the fear of God in people because of his trade...
As far as personal safety being on the line, its a different story. I think this goes for both practitioners of the traditional arts as well as MMA.

So what if you and your woman go to see a play on Broadway and it doesn't end until midnight? Do you leave early? What if you have tickets to see a ball game and the game doesn't end until 11:00pm? Do you leave early? What if the people you're with want to get something to eat afterwards and a drink? Do you say no because your BJJ training teaches you to go straight home and barricade your doors?Last edited by Tom Yum; 01-29-2007, 05:15 PM.

my moms bf was just telling me how his son was once cornered into a fight by a much bigger football player at school, and his son who was only 140lbs dominated the football player because his son was a really good wrestler. had this kid pulled a knife on the football player/bully he would have been serving 25 to life right now.

It was what the RBSD instructors in the UK call a "matchfight" being that, despite being forced into it, it was still a 1on1 with no weapons and he wasn't sucker punched. Good on him for winning. In those situations having solid training in a "sport' based MA would help you a lot.
