"grandmaster" is a word associated with asian styles. it is cultural. it usually did not mean "creator of style", or even "best fighter in style".

in old china (and to a point modern china), associations were everywhere. even martial arts schools were considered community organizations. not only did they train in thier system, they did public service or community programs (to one degree or another). a grandmaster usually headed such an organization.

this as inevitably the eldest member of the association, due to the "respect for the venerable elder" concept. they tended to direct the activities of the organization in the community they served. they had little if anything to do with the running of the schools themselves.

other cultures who looked upon china and saw "grandmasters" misunderstood the usage of the word and sought to emulate this "exalted" position, probably interpreting it as "supreme final word in this system".

it is a shame that nowadays, we have so many grandmasters, yet so few who choose to serve thier communities.

    thanks.

      hello,

thanks for the accolade. maybe scholar is to strong a word.... perhaps "jeopardy player" is more appropriate!!!

      hahahahahahahahahahaha!!!

context, especially historical and scientific, has always been a hobby (catastrophic irrational attraction)!! happened to be in the right place at the right time to hear some things.

hopefully this kind of info will be of use to someone here.

      thanks.
