I said I didn't know, that's hardly a conclusion.Originally posted by mellow View PostWhy don't you take the time to find out before jumping to conclusions?
Because training for "urban reality" is hardly necessary. Read OP.Really, why is that?
that Tai Chi sucks for self-defense? Really? What the heck are you even asking here?Really, what experiences do you have to make such generalized conclusions?
Yup.No, but many do take the time and effort to be better informed and trained to deal with situations they are likely to face on the job.
Wow, did I say that? At all? Please.I didn't know that some poor woman getting the crap kicked out of her because dinner wasn't on the table in time was supposed to be funny.
There is an obvious circle of like-minded people here who respond to any opinion that doesn't match their own with personal attacks on anything from grammar, assumptions about age or experience, or intentions. A difference of opinion is instantly regarded as trolling, and crys of "LEAVE US ALONE!" or simply eye-rolling smilies instead of thought out rebuttal. There are forums for MMA/BJJ, Muay Thai/Kickboxing, JKD, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc. Big deal. If you don't like this forum post then read and post in the other forums.Really, how is that?
OK then, let's start over. No, thank you. I would rather have an intellegent discussion than start another bullshido style sh** flinging contest.
How much time out of let's say 10 hours of training a week should be devoted torwards Urban Combat training and what should it consist of? I would say less than 30 minutes, consisting of de-escalation or problem avoidance for those lacking common-sense.
Or, for the less sensitive, what makes one MA more reality based than another?

Oh... the brush... I had a few inches to spare against the big rig but he was looking at me real funny like he was surprised to see me almost in the ditch with a shiny silver car!Originally posted by jubaji View PostProbably more practical than anything any of us discuss here (given the likelihood of a car accident versus a barroom brawl, gang attack, or wild pistoleros riding into town and shooting up the place).
Did you scratch the car against the brush or against the logging truck?
VS a LOGGING TRUCK? no fricking contest! I know when to evade trouble! (MOSTLY)

Glad we weren't going much faster or I may have been in a more serious accident. The truck was in the middle of the road!
Defensive driving is GOOD kung-fu!

Why don't you take the time to find out before jumping to conclusions?Originally posted by Tokyo Kid View PostI don't know that anyone here does,Really, why is that?but I do know that many schools are based on this concept of "reality". Though an entire forum devoted to "urban street combatives" is certainly a warning flag.

No, but many do take the time and effort to be better informed and trained to deal with situations they are likely to face on the job.Or maybe for law enforcement, though a badge doesn't automatically make you an expert in this field.I didn't know that some poor woman getting the crap kicked out of her because dinner wasn't on the table in time was supposed to be funny.I would think if anyone needs to lighten up a bit it would be a guy who deals with domestic disturbance calls all day.

No, thank you. I would rather have an intellegent discussion than start another bullshido style sh** flinging contest.Feel free to sprinkle in a few personal jabs. (I'll even help: I didn't graduate high school)

What makes you think anyone here trains out of fear?Originally posted by Tokyo Kid View PostWhat is it with you guys and hypothetical scenarios? Yeah, it happens, but not as often as it doesn't happen, not even close.
I don't advocate street fighting. I've seen where it leads, and I feel someone who actively trains usually finds a positive release for all that adrenaline. Nor do I glorify violence (except in the ring or cage, that I endorse). I find that those who train for the street usually out of fear are more inclined to need to prove themselves than someone who already has in the ring.
Train hard, HAVE FUN, and make friends. Truer words couldn't have come out of a fortune cookie.
