I arrested a guy on Sunday for beating up on his wife.

I would say the most common jobs we attend are traffic accidents and domestic violence incidents. Both around the same amount and we are only a small country. Domestic violence is a sad, tragic affair.

Sorry to hear that, Tant01, I really am. The reality of women being victimized by relatives and people they know is ridiculously high. I think I know few that haven't been. That's why I strongly advocate training and awareness for children and women especially. The place I grew up had a very high crime rate (#1 murder rate more than once actually), and though I did move my family to a better place, it still isn't Disneyland. Everyone in my family trains at least twice a week and is taught gun safety and how to use one.

The trick is to make it fun, and beneficial to your mental and physical health. Because we all know the chances of dying of cardiovascular disease is MUCH higher than being violently killed. And knowing... is half the battle.

Been working so haven't had time to reply, and I notice the thread has taken on the usual levels of shit flinging!

I don't talk about hypothetical situations. I am a front line cop so everything I talk about is based on first hand experiences involving myself, my fellow officers or the victims I deal with on a day to day basis.

I have fun when I train and I train for work but mostly because I enjoy it. I don't train out of fear.....I don't know about others here but I'm confident that they train because they enjoy it too.

What is it with you guys and hypothetical scenarios? Yeah, it happens, but not as often as it doesn't happen, not even close.

I don't advocate street fighting. I've seen where it leads, and I feel someone who actively trains usually finds a positive release for all that adrenaline. Nor do I glorify violence (except in the ring or cage, that I endorse). I find that those who train for the street usually out of fear are more inclined to need to prove themselves than someone who already has in the ring.

Train hard, HAVE FUN, and make friends. Truer words couldn't have come out of a fortune cookie.

But you are right. Certainly in my country the chances of getting in a life threatening situation or even a fight, is reasonably slim (although statistics have shown that violent offences have increased in the last 5 years). And most of the rest of the situations can be avoided using soft skills that are enhanced from RBSD training. You don't need to regularly train in RBSD, but a seminar or a few sessions combined with some effective sport based MA will put you in a good position to defend yourself should the shit hit the fan.

What I have discovered though is that if you don't regularly train using some dirty techniques in your training, you will not do them in reality. I have noticed many fellow officers struggle to contain a resisting offender because they are not using effective control and contain techniques that they have talked about using but never trained. Therefore they did not do it in reality and under pressure. It is about forming a mindset that you will actually use in a physical confrontation and that you have trained using regularly.

There are some RBSD clubs that do prey on the "fear" element in their training. "Fear" sells. People will pay money if they think they can sleep at night with a bit of comfort. I don't like it necessarily, sometimes it's pushing the reality boundries a bit and is erroneous, but a real fight is different to a sport one.....not massively different but different enough to make a point.
