  • Kicks at the fight

When I made some research on kicking, I figured out that it is not must do for the self defence. No matter how I tried to find a target for a kick, I found nothing, except the groin. I have no idea how often this happens, but sometimes when two fight, and one tries to strike the groin, it may gather the negative attention from the so called crowd. Sometimes, the people around shout: "where do you strike", perhaps sometimes it may earn your opponent a teammate. Of course if the strike connects it can end a fight fast

What is it so important to do in a street fight? It is to end the fight fast. I have no idea where should the kick be targeted at, except the groin. Kicking higher then a groin doesn't seems to be reasonable. The ground maybe covered with a broken glass, it may be covered with the ice, etc. It may be too easy to fall, etc

Another thing, punches. Punches are so fast, strong, and accurate, it can end the fight immediately. When one will kick once, another one can punch three or more times at the different targets. And the targets for a punch are many. Chin, jaw, temples, back of the head, neck, liver, solar plexus, groin. One successful punch will lead to more and to the win. Fast

By the way when you see videos like that, when a turkish boy alone won many people, you could have noticed that there were no kicks. Where do you put a kick in such situation? A muay thai kick to the leg, atleast one, will slow you down, and let others reach you. Now, watching all the fights like muay thai or k1, they actually win with kicks, but, they have gloves on. If it's fair, and kicks are as powerful as punches, why won't they take the gloves off? Because punches are too dangerous even for a trained fighter, with doctors are near to help, if something happens

It is obvious that kicks are not essential for the self defence

Gloves are to protect the hands. There is a saying in boxing circles that since the advent of gloves more boxers have died, as punching to the head doesnt do your hands as much damage when waring gloves. I dont know how true that is though.

As for kicks to the thigh, these can be very effective against somebody who hasnt conditioned their legs.

Kicks are a MUST have for SD. There are more targets to kick than you know what to do with son.

The groin is not the best place for a kick. Course you have to know how to kick properly to be an effective kicker for SD.

If you're kicking with the top of your foot like TKD or MT then you gonna break all those tiny bones in your foot if you hit anything solid with some force.

Go look up kickboxing leg breaks on youtube. That'll show you what not to do.

        that is interesting

possible weak spots at the legs would be: foots, toes, shins, knees, thighs, and the groin

now, will someone, who had atleast year of muay thai experience let you damage it

Last time I was in a fight nobody "let" me do anything to them. Least not in any real fight.

Kicking somebody with a round kick is good if the person you are fighting is not moving. However if he is coming toward you the kick will lose its effect if he jams you. Now straight kicks such as a TEEP are perfect because they are quicker and if the person closes in on you still can at least push him back and set up another attack. In Muay Thai we use the shin as our kicking surface so do a lot more damage when hitting soft tissue. Now if the guy you are fighting has a MT background too then you are not probably going to kick his legs because he will check your kicks but most people don't know MT so I don't worry about that. For the street I would rather use teep kicks, knees from the clinch, punches and elbows. I would avoid using round kicks because like I said earlier they are only good if the person remains in one spot and they also can be grabbed easily.

But don't take MY word for anything...

I never understood kicking someone in the head who is standing. While that was almost properly executed(he should have made contact with the ball of his foot, not toes and ball) your feet are waaaayyyy down there and his head is waaayyyy up there.

Your hands are much much closer.

I agree with most of this except, if you're pushing with the foot you are not generating proper power, and second shin kicks are a good way to break your own leg on someone else's.

Maybe if it is shin versus shin but kicking someone's thigh or neck will never break your shin. I have plenty of ridges on my shins from years of hitting things with them but never broke one. I dont' know where you get the idea of kicking with the shins is not good. They have been doing it in Thailand and Cambodia for years.

Yes in Thailand and Cambodia where everyone fights the same they have been doing it. Why do you have ridges on your shin? From constantly damaging the bone?

Sounds like it's not healthy, and any doctor will tell you so.

I have no ridges on my instep or the bottom of my foot, nor the ball of my foot.

As for kicks to the head, unless he's down already no thanks. As for kicks to the thigh, I can kick you with the bottom of my foot faster than with my shin, and do more damage, have a better angle and gain more power, with less effort.

That's where I get the idea that shin kicking is not good.

Hmmmm......the side kick to the leg. I wonder why nobody else is doing this especially in MMA.
