Same rules apply for any hot shot guy that knows MA... or wannabe tough guy ... you never know who youre up against so dont go all " I know martial arts so I will win" dont matter if youre a guy or girl...

Fighting/being attacked on the street ... is so much about chance or luck.... sad to say...skill is only a small part of it....sooooo many damn things can happen on the street you cant even list them all... If you got skills you might not even have the time to use them - you could be attacked from behind or whatever... list goes on...

Weapons in the street..... pipes, knives...guns even.... so what happens when the girl being attacked finds a lead pipe and smashes the guy in the head with it ...the guy still have more of a chance??So a guy wont get knocked out if he gets hit in the head with a pipe and a girl would???
      Come on....

Yes in general an average man is stronger than an average woman....DUH!! But there are alot of "above average strength" people around too...

IMO ,a persons gender has very little to do with the outcome of these kinds of confrontations...

I think Joes original post applies to BOTH genders... best thing to do on the street is run..

Don't underestimate women..I've gotten beaten up by a woman in a fair fight..and have you heard about the girls in high school that wrestle? Several have STATE TITLES in the boys division. So if they are the same size and train the same..women are just as strong as men.

I have seen alot of talk about avg this and avg that. When the stats of women that take martila arts and workout are going up every year more than double and there is a real shift toward a no BS approach to street survival and away from classical mess, what is avg. I have taught many a woman who after their first lesson or soon after were attacked by big guys and kicked their @#%. I have seen experienced martial arts women get raped. The only factor is the type of training and the mindset they have. I have some women with no training come to learn because they just beat down a huge guy. My point is that in life avg is not avg its just a word used by people who dont understand the full potential of the human spirit. Avg is a cop out. What we should look at it making sure that all women and men have the tools they need to survive. In all the time spent arguing over whether or not somone has the sexual orientation to survive, we could be training people so that sexual orientation isn't a factor

            Big Fu

There are a lot of messages posted to this forum by young men who say in effect: The average man is bigger and stronger than the average woman and thus women will always be at a disadvantage. A few have gone as far as to say that it's basically hopeless to try to defend yourself, which is a bit of an overstatement as far as I'm concerned.

What occurs to me is that this same argument could be applied to many of the light to middleweight men out there. So, how many of the guys out there feel that what you have trained in is useless against a skilled guy with 100 lbs of muscle on you? Do you feel it is advisable to discourage smaller people from trying to learn to defend themselves because they're disadvantaged in terms of size? Or is there some constructive advice you could give to these people?

I think most guys who say that have never fought a woman who is a competitive/professional fighter, because its like fighting a male lightweight prof. fighter. She will not stand their when you fire jabs and crosses; she will move and be hard to hit! And watch carefully for openings.

Any woman that has real fight skills will have no problem taking a hit and giving it back. I think what some of the guys are saying is that because women avoid getting in touch with their fighting spirit and physical conditioning, they are at a natural disadvantage compared to men. They would rather persue tae bo, rather than thaiboxing.

haha , i was just watching a training video clip of Debi Purcell...
damn... I pity any man who tries to attack her...

some advice for smaller people? hit the gym and hit it hard...
Train your ass off in whatever art you want but it youre thinking about self defence be REALISTIC about it. Learn about the mental side of fighting and avoiding fights too. Do some research on what arts are and aren't effective in the street and when you do learn stuff..Dont ever get that "I know martial arts so I can beat anyone" attitude. Thats a dangerous attitude for ANYONE to have...

I train alot and workout...I'm a lil guy myself (5'7, 165lbs) but i know theres always gonna be someone bigger and stronger than me ...and i live with it.... I train cos I love the arts and I learn skills that will give me more of a chance(maybe not a HUGE chance but at least its SOMETHING) in getting away from some ugly "street sitiation" or putting up a fight against a much bigger guy OR girl(debi purcell types....)!!

Most importantly...Dont listen to people like crazyjoe ..this whole thread is kinda silly anyways..

that pic of the guy holding up a gun..

"Hey Lady I dont care if Bruce himself taught you , givei it up!!"

I guess you'd have a better chance of defeating that guy, Joe??

                lol

5'7" and 165 isn't little; some might say borderline stocky. I'm 5'10" and normally weigh in at 167-169; I've crept into light heavyweight territory at 174.

Strength and size are variables to consider, but are never the be-all, end-all within a 50 lb weight differential. I've sparred with guys who are 205+ in stand up and can land hits in the first 30 seconds without getting hit; speed is important too - a quality that men as well as women can use to their advantage. When it comes to grappling, strength and size come into play but the counter to those attributes is polished technique and stamina (example: Noguiera vs. Sapp, Gracie vs. Severn, Tank vs. Taktarov)

Good technique, speed and stamina are as mentionable as raw strength and power, and can be developed in a dedicated woman or light-welter-middleweight male. Remember the Jones Jr. vs. Ruiz fight?

The most powerful combination is technique, speed, strength, power - like Tyson in the 80s, Mark Kerr, Hoost, Kro Cop and others; these folks at their prime were unstoppable. They just might be street effective too.

                    Women's self-defense isn't hopeless . . .

I think that most women are at a disadvantage for physical self-defense compared to most men. Generally, women are weaker, smaller, and are involved in sports with less contact and brutality than men. But, the "fighting" aspect of self-defense is only the tip of the iceberg. Learning awareness and street smarts are more important than learning to fight from a self-defense point of view.

And, as far as the fighting aspect goes, there are always exceptions to the rule. LOL . . . rent Jackass: The Movie and watch "Ass Kicked by Girl."

There will always be exceptions to the rules. I know my gf has never taken a martial art in her life, but I will tell you that she can throw down. I watched her kick the sh@#t out of a guy that was about 210lbs., and you can't say this guy was just standing there cuz he went to swing at her and she just layed him down into a barbwire fence..........trust me it was not pretty but I laughed anyway.

I myself have trained in martial arts all my life and have trained in many different styles. I have seen many different women in many different styles. I find that the best fit I saw women in was something that deals with alot of kicking maybe like TKD or MT (I found that a woman that was well trained in Aikido was very dangerous as well) One thing I can say about most women is that usually they get flexible much faster than most men and stay flexible and with the right kind of training they can kick just as fast, accurate, and powerful as a man. If you don't beleive me just ask my buddy that thought he would go try out Tang Soo Do a few years ago. The first night he got to spar they put him up against a girl that was a 2nd black and from what I could tell was pretty good. Anyways this girl had come across alot of guys that doubted her because of her gender and did not like it a bit. When the match started he said to her "hey don't try to hard cuz I don't wanna hurt you" and man was that the wrong thing to say cuz the first lick was a hook kick right to the temple and he was out cold. Needless to say he never doubted a woman again and eventually shortly after left the class.........I think now he is in a mental institution.

The whole point is that sometimes you should not doubt the person before you see what they can do because in my time I have seen some women that were excellent and better than most men, but I do think that in most classrooms it is kind of lop-sided. Most instructors nowadays will move girls up faster than they will men. Maybe it is because they feel sorry for some of them, and maybe not. I think some of the problem is that most instructors think the same as most men and think that a woman will never be as good as a man so they end up promoting them when they are not where they should be just because they think they can't compete with the men. I really think that women in martial arts should be re-evaluated because they are going to be in martial arts and everyone is just going to have to accept it one way or another.

Just a fact to point out! Did you know that in some states kicking a man Let's just say (private parts) is a federal offense. Be aware of laws in your state, otherwise aim a bit lower and break a knee cap. Doesn't take muck power at all and no way will he run after you. I don't know very many women in MA but for myself I do not take it to walk around all muscle bound with the attitude I can stomp your butt.
I take it to increase my health advantages, and mental relaxation (sweat can really chill the mind) and the real reason I started ,it was an activity that my husband and I can enjoy together. We both have very stressful and demanding jobs. So this is our outlet and time together.

I don't know, we were at a party and this guy was trying to get 2 of her freinds to fight and she was trying to break it up. He proceed to call her a ho for trying to stop it and I knocked down 2 of my buddies to get over there and I grabbed him and was about to lay him out and all of a sudden some hands just flew by and he went down into a barbwire fence.

I mean she is a small girl and she is not very powerful but I showed her a few things and she is pretty quick. She layed 3 good licks right in his mouth before I even saw it coming. I saw the guy about 10min. later and his lip was all bloodied up and he was torn up from falling into the fence.........I don't think I ever laughed so hard.
