guys i read alot of you bashing tkd and its practitioners. and i think it's time to interject with a little common sense. the first guy i took any martial arts from was a tkd instructor. he was also a former marine and collegiate wrestler. he is now a detective in s metropolitan police deparment in texas. we stay in touch becuase he was also a police officer in my meighborhood and taught part time at my JHS. i was seven then and i must say 23 years of studying a wide range of MA from wing chun to aikido to savate have left me with fond memeories of mr. epperson. he was tuff, even on his kids class when we sparred we sparred hard. and when i returned to study with him in my early 20's the "grown up's" sparred full contact(we did not bounce up and down like wtf'rs). mr. e trained in korea and also study karate in okinawa. so lay off tkd if it's tuaght correctly (minus flying axe cartwheel butterfly kicks) its a fine art. mr. e always stuck to basics front kick, round kick, back kicks. he also taught groung fighting before it was in vogue. and he was always proud to be a tkd instructor.
i am astound how many of you bash tkd yet don't turn the microscope on your own arts. take JKD the all exaulted art of bruce "i study 3 years with yip mann" lee. i have spent years both with dill-jkd and the inansanto orginization. and i can tell you from using (or more appropriately trying to use) these techniques (while bouncing and studying to be a police officer) that lee was on to something with boxing and MT ,but alot of the trapping and patty cake adopted by the lee traditionlist (an oxymoron) and the kali ppl is ineffective. case in point i was bouncing a guy from the "rose" where i worked as a bouncer, he threw a haymaker i tried a to do a pak/lop and ate his fist, he then grabbed me i tried another technique i learned in a jkd class. now i was on my way to the ground. what next? i thumbed him in the eye, a technique i learned from mr. e when i was 7 or 8. we rolled around i wound up on top and applied a choke.
you no why MT guys win fights against TKD guys? becuase americanized TKD is a tad lax on conditioning and contact sparring. MT fighters on the other hand are aerobiclly fit and prepared to get hit. lets face guys there are a lot of good tkd schools just like there are a lot of bad bjj and MT gyms.
and as for self defense try a thai kick in athletic shoes and blue jeans or try fighting 2 guys while applying the triangle choke.
