  • Olympic Judo Coming Up

WHAT ARE THE CHANCES OF OF THE U.S.OLYMPIC JUDO TEAM THIS SUMMER? I wonder if we will get a medal. But I will bet money that they will ?

WE will see if the current batch of classical trained judo athletes can compete with sport -oriented athletes, or will we have more of the same 50 years of U.S. Judo failure!

Except I predict a not very good showing by the richest nation in the world, that seems to excel at ALL the other olympic sports EXCEPT Judo.

Hello ,do you see a PATTERN? Or do you too have on the "BLINDERS"?

BTW, you wouldn't make a chance even with the proper training
My countryman Mark Huizinga will beat you

Only 16.000.000 people in my country and we still expect to get 9 medals overal ( all sports that is)
How much does the US expect to get?

And moonies are korean not japanese.

Perhaps you would find www.rickross.com a forum more suited to your interests.

ALL THE JUDO IS ON NEXT WEEK AT ABOUT 1:30 IN THE MORNING.U.S.CENTRAL TIME.WE HAD ONE GUY RHADI OUT WITH A BAD KNEE.
sO OUR #2 GUY IS IN THERE ALREADY.I READ THE JAPANESE COACH IS EXPECTING 7 GOLD IN JUDO HOPING FOR 9.COULD THAT BE BECAUSE THEY PRACTICE CULTURALY APPROPRIATE CUSTOMS. INTERMINGALED WITH ADVANCED TRAINING METHODS? AND SAFE TRAINING METHODS?(LOW INJURY RATE).COULD IT ALSO BE BECAUSE OF A CHANGE IN THE RULES WHERE THEY STAND YOU BACK UP AFTER 5 SECONDS INSTEAD OF LETTING MAT WORK CONTINUE? BECAUSE THE RUSSIANS WERE BEATING THEM AT THEIR OWN GAME?

It could be because they trained harder. Do Japanese or Russian Judoka receive state grants? US Judoka might have to keep a day job.

Just heard that the US is going for 100 medals
how many Americans are ther 270 million? that's one medal per 2.7 mil
we go for 9 and have 16 mil people rhat's 1 per 1.77 mil

If someone knows what the UK and france are aiming at than we could make a further commparison, the country with the lowest number is the best

                    Maybe ad Japan too

now take all these countries number 1 per how many poeple do judo in those countries

Combine the two and you have your chances on a medal

                    No excact number though

Kevin how many judoka does the US judo association have and how do they select for the US team?

John Holm (judochampions.com) told me that there are 4,000 total in the U.S.!
I imagine there are points for international competition and then there are the Olympic trials. His stepdaughter Leilani (17) just missed going to Athens she lost second place to a woman(23) that she had beaten the last 6 times they met. Some trainer changed her diet and she ran out of steam warming up. That is a hard lesson, don't fix it if it ain't broke.
I hope the U.S. does okay but this classical mindset is so pervasive here.People try to have a foot in both worlds and that makes them even worse!

Look how good our wrestlers are .Last time we beat that russian general in greco roman but our same guy that won last time frostbit his toes off snowmobileing. I met that coach at holms judo club before he is from minneapolis area. Chandler or something like that.Broze medalist in the 80's.
John Holm had two judo players on the 80 olympic team. But the commies invaded afganistan and we boycotted.

Just saw a quote from Rhandi ferguson at Athens. So he is in there. He is very strong! And intelligent, he is an engineer or something. His coach is that Irwin guy. Grapplers... something or other.

The Iranian judo bozo is withdrawing and going home because he drew an Israili first round. Isn't that good sportsmanship!

4.000 judoka, you got to be kidding man, as far as I know our judo assoc has 50.000 members

to be selected for the Olympics they have to get a medal at the European Championship
I think If you compare that would be Pan American champion for you

but seriously Kevin if the US has only 4.000 people to choose from, it isn't thaat strange that a medal is hard to obtain
Its 1 judo for every 67.500 people
My country 1 in 320 people do Judo
to have an equal chance you would need 843.750 judoka even if your training was as modern as it could get

Like I said before in the other thread, po[ularity is very important for a country's chances

You proved that with mentioning wrestling, in Europe, wrestling isn't very popular (as often stated by Bas Rutten during PrideFC commentary) it is in the US so your chances are much higher there
In a country like Turkey, it is popular too and they do rather well too

You and your teacher should look for way of making judo more popular
And try to involve others too, don't do so by starting about the technical trainingsmethods and the bowing, if your ways are better, people will draw too you anyway, no just work on popularising it
Do demos, where the audience will think: that's nice, I could do that!"
Make it look nice but easy and fun to do
