apparently Pitbulls back in the day had a reputation as trustworthy and loving dogs here is Helen Keller and her pitbull

yes for generations this animal has been part of American tradition with no legacy of brutality or reputation as a people killer/mauler, instead it was the all American dog, but some who wallow in ignorance and fear what they do not fully understand would remove it from the face of the earth.

Okay, Okay - Gonzo you are killing us 'pit haters' with superior PR ; Also didn't guess the right breed either the first time or the second.

When I have the time, I'm gonna do my own internet research (using sources other than the American Pit Bull Lovers Society) and see about rates of attacks and stuff. I promise to report my findings and if I'm wrong I'll find a pit bull and scratch her ear. - although it may be a few days before I get around to it.

This is not a surrender, just a temporary cease-fire while I gather facts.

The dogs responsible for most homicides are pit bulls and Rottweilers: Pit bull-type dogs were involved in 1/3 of dog bite related fatalities.

"Studies indicate that pit bull-type dogs were involved in approximately a third of human DBRF (i.e., dog bite related fatalities) reported during the 12-year period from 1981 through1992, and Rottweilers were responsible for about half of human DBRF reported during the 4 years from 1993 through 1996....[T]he data indicate that Rottweilers and pit bull-type dogs accounted for 67% of human DBRF in the United States between 1997 and 1998. It is extremely unlikely that they accounted for anywhere near 60% of dogs in the United States during that same period and, thus, there appears to be a breed-specific problem with fatalities." (Sacks JJ, Sinclair L, Gilchrist J, Golab GC, Lockwood R. Breeds of dogs involved in fatal human attacks in the United States between 1979 and 1998. JAVMA 2000;217:836-840.)

Other breeds were also responsible for homicides, but to a much lesser extent. A 1997 study of dog bite fatalities in the years 1979 through 1996 revealed that the following breeds had killed one or more persons: pit bulls, Rottweilers, German shepherds, huskies, Alaskan malamutes, Doberman pinschers, chows, Great Danes, St. Bernards and Akitas. (Dog Bite Related Fatalities," Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, May 30, 1997, Vol. 46, No. 21, pp. 463 et. seq.)

I believe that ANY large dog should be temperment tested, and having found unsound temperment should be treated accordingly (muzzled in public, mandatory kennel or containment fence on residence).
The dogs that kill are ill bred and ill raised, this includes full blooded dogs bred by breeders seeking color and or size instead of TEMPERMENT the most important quality in ANY dog, no matter the breed. Ill eat my hat if you could search newspapers from 1960-1860 and find a handful of stories about pitbull attacks. Old time breeders would simply put a dog down if shown to be human aggressive, no pity or excuses because they KNEW the potential of these dogs. Pits were considered a fine family dog Indeed one of their oldest names was "Old Irish family dog" before the Ghetto craze helped send this breed down a bad road.
Dog licensing should be mandatory for ALL large breeds, including a temperment test. I dont think the Pit is an Angel but they are hardly the monster made out by the media. Like I said puppy mills and backyard breeders made this epidemic and ignorant people exacerbate it. People who actually reward and encourage aggressive behaviour, people who do not exercise their dogs to release the energy of a working breed, people who havent taken the basic steps to establish who exactly in the household is in charge.

You have to have a license to operate a motor vehicle and have inspected to see that it meets safety regualtions for use on public roads,
why not to own a potentially dangerous dog of any breed?????????

oh and some more pits in Old time America photos, couldnt resist as this is the best proof of the ruined legacy of this dog once considered part of American, not ghetto culture.

Like I said the reputation of this dog pre Ghetto fabulous culture was one of trustworthyness and stability. I could go on but pictures tell a better story.

so anyone care to find a "pre-pitbull craze" newspaper story from back in the day about a pitbull attack? Some one please take up the challenge!

Every photo illustrates the remarkable unattractiveness of the breed; boxy head, beady eyes, disproportionately over-developed jaws, stubby legs...
A fine example of man's misguided tinkering with nature to produce a thing which completely exemplifies the dictum of "form follows function". It's even more unfortunate that in this case the function is so very ignoble.

                .

form and function? too bad your analysis is totally wrong
this is one of the most athletic, agile, and intelligent breeds on the face of the earth. So you think they are ugly? they were never ment to win a beauty contest.
Sorry your friends bought a bad dog and it attacked someone, you never did address my questions about your friends purchasing their pits for the puppymill they planned. Were they able to interact with the sire/dam of either of the dogs? Did they come from a reputable breeder or another person seeking just to breed dogs for money? My money is on the latter.

                    ]

That is a dishonest attempt to portray all large breeds as being equally likely to kill when you know it is not the reality.

This is all such a load of crap. All of this excuse-making is so transparent as to be risable. A Cocker-Spaniel of less than perfect purity, raised by folks who aren't professional trainers, and not sent to doggy-harvard still won't be likely to kill anyone. THAT is a pretty important distinction.

No, fvck you and your mindless pursuit of image over the lives of both dogs and humans.

Tell some of the dead children and their families why you just couldn't live with yourself if you got a lab or a golden retriever or a newfoundland or even a boxer. You selfish prick.

                              Wrong!!!

Dogs that are capable and likely to kill and maybe have the above attributes are dogs that kill. Ill breed and ill raise a Lhasa Apso and it still won't kill anyone. The dishonesty is sickening.
