    of course, Marsalis
    also...
    Herbie Hancock
    and of course,
    Miles Davis
    Charlie Parker
    Thelonius Monk
    Bud Powell
    Coleman Hawkins
    John Coltrane

    and more recently;
Dizzy Gillespie, Pat Metheny, John McLaughlin, Grover Wahington Jr., Quincy Jones,

ohhh man! each name conjures up a riff in my mind and I could actually compose a symphony with what I'm hearing in there!

You should have ignored him after he said that you are not that capable to enjoy classical music in the first place. What is classical music anyway? What is it in the music that makes it far superior in other genre of music? The answer is none. I dont believe in such hype. Music has no boundaries. Different strokes for diff folks.

Usually the mediocre musicians tend to think otherwise or people with limited musical taste, not only will they say some music is superior, they will even go so far as to judge some as not being music at all

In particular clasically trained musician tend to be very close minded, they will for instance frown upon someone using an elctric violin
Or sprcing up a clasical piece so it becomes mainstream
They like to be elite and anything that will make their elite status less is rejected

the subject of the thread sounds like such a person

By the time I reached university level, I was easily a medicore musician in the groups, because the rest of the players were music majors who spent 24/7 practicing and got paid to play regular gigs, whereas I wasn't.

For me it was just a hobby and an appreciation.

sorry to burst your bubble but mediocre is what the rest of the player were, you were/are an amateur
even people that are being payed for gigs regularly or heck a member of an orchestra are in a sense midiocre.
Maybe not compared to us but on the scale of musicians they are
all this doesn't say anything about the ability to appreciate (clasical) music as good taste can not be learned.
Now anything that is an aquired taste( like FREE jazz or modern orchestral compositions) are just to play the elite card
Art with a Big A is what they like to consider what they do( in my language Kunst met een grote K) whereas it is in fact Art with a small F for following

                  No bubble burst, Toudiy.

These guys were really, really good according to non-musicians; most of them were better and in some cases, alot better than I and I've got no problem admitting that.

These groups had tryouts; I'm just thankful that I even made the cut, especially as a non-music major.

kunst met een grote K (engels -->) means an art with a big A, thanks for the colloquial Dutch and the meaning.

Ik moet meer homework gedoen...haha, my Dutch is getting worse.

                  Tot ziens!

                      Interesting discussion.
What the 'nose in the air' crowd forget, is that, what they regard as classical, was the jazz of it's day.
Jazz is about pushing boundaries and exploring, which is what all your classic "classical" composers were doing in their own snapshot of time.

Not too dissimilar from the futile discussions going on about MMA vs TMA???

There definitely is/has been a class issue with both classical and Jazz musicians, but music itself denies class. Depending on how you look at it, music is older than speech.

                      Me.
