For Canadians, one of the most important battles took place against the Germans, in World War One, at Vimy Ridge, in April 1917.

          Details are here: http://www.civilization.ca/cwm/vimy/index_e.html

It was one of those "birth of a nation" kind of events, sort of like Gallipoli is for the Aussies.

The other important battle for Canadians (a celebrated defeat in contrast with Vimy Ridge) would be World War Two's infamous Dieppe Raid, August 19, 1942.

the battle for grozny in the first chechen war was notable. russian forces invaded the chechen capital with brute force and massive numbers, only for entire colums of their armor vehicles and entire brigades of soldiers to be completely anihilated by chechen guerillas defending the capitol.

"By mid-afternoon, the 131st brigade occupied the train station, unaware of the 81st regiment’s situation. The 131st parked its tanks and armored personnel carriers around the building and awaited further orders. Somewhere within that period of time, a communications officer heard the words, “Welcome to Hell,” on his headset[citation needed]. Shortly after, Chechen fighters, hiding in the depot buildings, the post office, and the five-story building surrounding the station, opened devastating automatic and anti-tank weapons fire. The surviving Russian soldiers took cover inside the station, which the Chechens soon set ablaze. Leading Russian officer Colonel Ivan Savin radioed for help and artillery fire, which never came."

the second battle of grozny was also notable. russian forces did a little better this time, having learned from some of their previous mistakes. they leveled the entire city, and guerrillas ended up escaping into the mountains were they could continue the guerrilla war against russia.

Christ does EVERY THREAD have to be another opportunity to re-visit the same three subjects again and again?

How About Battle of Hastings 1066?

The French army invaded Briton and held ground. This was significant for history but also this:
The battle of hastings is generally credited with an early use of 'combined arms' in Medieval European warfare - a revolutionary step forward in tactics.

At it's most basic, the concept of combined arms says an army will coordinate missile, infantry and cavalry and direct each to the best target to aid the others.

The monitor and the Merrimac. American civil war

THe first naval battle involving two metal hulled ships. The merricmac was a conventional warship with iron scaling hung on it's sides, while the monitor built such that it floated moslty underwater with only two guns inside a turret

The ships met in an inlet and fought to an anti-climactic stalemate. Historically, it was a first though

Scotland vs England 1314AD at Bannockburn in Scotland.
Battle over dominion and rulership of Scotland.

Post the largely fictitious events in Mel Gibsons movie 'Braveheart'.

"For the Scots, the battle was undeniably one of the greatest in history. Their King, who for 18 years had fought for a cause once thought impossible, had led them to victory. Edward may have had the military might of all England behind him, but in the end it was no match for an army of freedom fighters distinctly lacking in blue blood. "
