  • usefulness of the headbutt

How good do you think a headbutt is? is it something that you keep as a first strike weapon, do you reserve it for as and when. do you think its something you have but probably wouldnt use?

I think its high up the list of first strike weapons, ive practiced it a lot in thaiboxing in various forms so feel i have it quite well in its different variations.
I like that it requires little telegraphing etc and is powerful. The only thing is range, so if i was up close it would be high up in the list for me to use.

    how about you?

In the right range, at the right time, under just circumstances - it is a major tool. I consider it part of my "oh shit" responses, for when things are bad and you are in trouble, as opposed to one of my primary choices of technique.

In clinch range, when things are serious, and you really need to drop someone - it is probably unequalled. It allows you to keep your base solid, your hold on your opponent firm, and yet deliver a very punishing technique. Typically, its a fight ender.

The only caution I would give is that from a reasonable force point of view it is very much frowned upon, and legally it has negative stigma attached to it's use. If it is used to full effect you can be talking reconstructive surgery on your opponents face, taking you well into GBH. If you used it as a first strike you can pretty much forget a plea of self-defence, so I'd say only use when absolutely vital.

I have a friend who's brother's go-to move was the headbutt in bar fights. The guy was like 5'6'' and would just get as close to them as possible then leaping headbutt them.

I thought for sure this was another thread started by HeroicWolf? LOL

When I was in the service our English counterparts were notorious for smashing with their skulls. It was all the rage! It seems like it's common enough these days that folks would appreciate the offensive capability of that particular weapon?

How do I effectively train this on the heavy bag? I wanna be able to be as vicious as Paul Vunak in this technique.

Hang a solid, rawhide leather, 180lb heavy bag, and slam your head into it 500 times a day.

Come back and tell us how you get on.

If you're just going for "conditioning" a tree will work too...

                Numb skull anyone?

                  lol at some replies,

tant, yeah i think us english like this in particular. not sure why.

ive been re-evaluating what i would use recently, picking more aggressive tools i guess.
I live in a more violent area now, my gf needs protecting, i have to have priorities.

Still chances of getting into a fight are pretty low. I guess.

I know what you mean mate. When I lived in a leafy little suburb of Hertfordshire, there just wasn't the need to worry about self-protection, it kind of left my consciousness. Since moving back into London, I've felt my awareness shoot straight back up, there is just far more threat, far more potential for violence.

I think it may not help that you've been out of training for a while, I'm sure you know what that's like. An inactive body leads to an overactive imagination. Its frustrating when you don't feel in good shape, and that frustration feeds a little more fear of your surroundings.

You're a big guy, and you can motor, in shape or out of shape. I can't imagine many people in Mbro starting shit with you, and if they did I'm sure you'd mow them down - headbutt or no headbutt.

thanks mate, your analysis is probably spot on, im thinking too much, being over protective.
Im sizing up the likely possible people when im out , you know the types you walk past and you think, wonder if they will start somethihng? and as i go by i think, you just try it, ill smash you to bits.
and of course nothing happens, so im being paranoid.

Thats absolutely the stuff. That confidence, that mentality, that assurance - that's self-protection.

i never really thought about it like that before, you might be right, and i wonder if it shows in body language when its thought.

The headbutt is a quick fight ender - but be careful who you go around headbutting.

The damage can be horrible and you may not be able to convince a jury that you really had to knock 5 teeth out of someone's head because he called your girlfriend a slut.

                            But the headbutt is great.

                            I like this one:

Put your forehead on your opponents chest while in-fighting.

Slide your forehead up his chest by straightening your legs an dyour lower back and hit him full force under the chin.

Very sweet - uppercut from hell with a fist that can't easily be hurt.

Your head weighs between 35 /40 lbs,you have a ridge of hard bone so headbutting someone correctly is like hitting someone in the face with a bowling ball.Search on youtube there are some great training methods
