Well Mat, it isn't anything on your site as mothers can not upload too.
All the guys "answering" weren't even adressing this question.
thruth is that appart from those maintaining the site nobody really can know why this is happening. Specifically as is does seem possible upload pictures for your signature.
maybe the folder used for the attachment has a size limit and is full, can only be fixed by the admins by eitther deleting old attachments or increasing the size
but this is all wild guessing

Translation:You can't really "Upload" Pictures, they have to be on another site from which you link to them
Sites like imageshack can be used to store the images

Mat is right, you can not upload pictures with the manage Attachments Feature, tried gif tif jpeg and bmp all with in the maximum specs and all failed, I switched off tthe firewall but no changes in behavior
