Last march I broke every bone but one in my left ankle when I slipped on wet grass going down a hill. Recovery has been slow and frustating - not because of the bones, they healed completely after six weeks in a cast, but because of the trauma to the muscles and ligaments. When the bones broke, the ankle was also sprained and dislocated. It still swells and aches and throbs when I don't pamper it (compression, elevation, massage, ice packs every day). They muscles and ligaments are now weaker and don't offer the support they once did even though I exercise them every day.
So my point is that you should be very careful regarding ankle sprains; the brace is an excellent thing to use, but you should also be careful of the terrain you run on and invest the time in proper warm-up of specifically the ankles before you take off.
