  • Height/Weight/Frame

Hey gusy. Just tryin to find the right weight and stuff for me, and want those who also want to know to post and find out.

I am 5'8, 190lbs, and have a large frame. I do weight training five days a week at school, but my karate hasn't really been consistant lately so I wouldn't count that. I will start goin thoug a few times a week next week. Anywho, what is the right, weight for my height? I certainly don't want to be skinny, (none of us do in our field), but I don't want to be huge either. Grant it I've got some muscle, but no six pec.

So, does anyone have one of those height weight charts? Those have quite a bit of range, but still...

    Thanks,
    GR

do you mean something like this: http://www.healthchecksystems.com/heightweightchart.htm

5'8 and being 190lbs sounds a little to big too me, but thats just reading it, it would be impossible for me to really tell tho.

      thats like 13-14 stone?

thats a bit too heavy for 5ft 8, I'd say the average weight for 5ft 8 is something like 9.5-10.5 stone

in all actuality I'm probably not 5'8. I'll have to check my height again. As I said, I have plenty of muscle, but I need to lose what isn't.

        Thanks, GR

Be careful interpreting height-weight charts. I don't think they do well in accounting for "muscle weight". I know many people who are way above their weight-range for their height and are in great shape. For example, take Dennis Rodman. In his peak physical form, I read that he was still technically "overweight" according to many height-weight charts yet I don't think anyone that has seen him play would say he was. I think body-fat percent is a better indicator of ones condition than height-weight charts but still fallible depending of method used.

I think a regular weight for a big frame at your height is between 165-175 lbs. I am the same height and body frame as you it seems and I am pretty comfortable at 170 though I am gonna lower it a bit more. When I started at 180 I had a lot of fat but trimmed up quite a bit without losing too much weight.

Thank you Kony for your statement, because I agree with you 100%. The best way to find out your true bodyfat content is to do the water weight test, they weight you outside of water, then in water. Body fat is much lighter than water while everything else in your body is heavier. Going off of systems and generalities is a bad way to measure your health. I am about 6-6'1 in height yet due to not only my massive strength, speed, and stamina, I weight a suprising 275lbs, way off the charts. Yet when tested by doctors, I tend to have a normal, healthy person's body fat percent instead of what most would consider. But Kony is right, those charts are first for normal people and secondly what they assume one should be, it doesn't take count of high muscle content and weight.

190lbs seems too heavy for 5'8

the only way you'll get your six pack is to lose the fat, you are 190 now, i say you aim for at least 165lbs and then see how you are from there. Continue the weights and start with cardiovascular training aswell to get rid of the fat, also look at your current diet.

yeah...I started increasing the intensity of my workout and cuttin back. I had'nt been to karate much lately, but I started goin every day. I'm already down a little. I didn't mention I'm still a teen, and got more growing to do. Regardless, I wanna keep things flowing so that I even out and don't have to mess around with it too much.

                  Thanks for the tips guys.

btw...at the rate I'm goin...35min weight training 5 days a week, 45min karate class 5 days a week, (at least this week...next week it'll be three-ish), and with a healthy diet, it shouldn't take too long to get down right?

                    Megawolf,

You are very welcome! I think people put too much emphasis on "ideal" weights. I myself am about 5'10 and 200 lbs (was once 300lbs!). I have a 33-34" waist and everyone thinks I weigh 160-165. Muscle throws a monkey wrench into all those height-weight charts.

                              Sanitarium,

I did not claim to be in shape at 300lbs. I looked more like Barnie than Arnie!
However, now that I am at 200lbs, its a different story. While I am by no means "ripped", I am more muscular than I ever was in my life and more so than most 200lb'ers at my height/weight. Weightlifting was my best friend throughout my weight-loss journey.
