  • ears pop after heavy exercise?

Hi I was wondering if anyone else has experienced their ears popping after a training session. It only happens when i really push myself, and usually involves sparring.

My heart rate does not slow down for about 1/2 hour after either. This has only happened a few times recently after really hardcore sessions but i'm worried about pushing myself too far in the future.

I'm 5'10 - 13 stone stocky build and i exercise twice a week, mountain biking and kick boxing. I race mountain bikes when i can, cross country and some endurance so i think i'm pretty fit? Age 31.

your thoughts/advice would be a help.

I'm not a medically qualified neither a doctor; you should go see them instead.

Ear popping is caused by a pressure differential between your inner and outter ear; you probably have allergies or sinus issues - drainage can enter certain parts of your ear. When it moves suddenly, you can get a 'pop'. If you don't have allergy issues, then you might have sustained some damage some where...

Do you drink caffiene before workouts or energy drinks/suppliments? They can keep your heart rate a little higher over a longer period of time.

i do plan to visit my doctor. i drink some tea and coffee during the day, i may try to cut this out all together.

i'm not sure the ear popping is sinus or allergy related i think it must be to do with raised blood pressure possibly as my heart is racing so fast? as my heart rate slows my ears start to clear.

I'm skeptical, but do tell us what the doc has to say.

it could be caused from subserviant BEHAVIOUR SUCH AS BOWING.

OR IN TOM YUMS CASE GOING NORTH / SOUTH TOO MUCH. HA HA

                        diagnosis...

well i went to the doc and explained the problem, he initially looked a little puzzled, he firstly checked my eardrum for excess wax, erggh, but it was fine. if there is excess wax sometimes the wax can expand with heat and cause popping. However this was not the case.

He said that during exercise your blood pressure can go through the roof and this was most likely the cause. He took my blood pressure at rest and it was fine.

Basically i don't think i'm as fit as i thought and i don't think i should push myself that hard without working up to it. It certainly a strange one but i'm not keen on trying to recreate the problem, i'm going to exercise 3 times a week steadily instead off once/twice heavily.

                          Hey,

A funny thing happened to me with this.

Yesterday I saw the post about ears popping and I had a feeling I'd encountered this before, possibly during weight training at the gym. That night I went to kickboxing training and for some reason we did the hardest session I've ever done.

Midway through the "burnout" period my left ear just closed up. It was like someone had their finger stuck in there. And for about the next 30 mins afterward I just couldn't pop that ear. I was like "right, I'm going home to find that post and see what all this is about!".

Sadly I now know that I'm just unfit, but a big thanks to steve for actually going to the doctor and figuring this one out.

                            i'm not unique then!

I'm glad i'm not a complete freak and someone else knows what i'm on about! After having some time to ponder on it i remember having sinus problems when i was younger. i still sometimes find it quite difficult breathing through my nose and everything is connected, right? i think this coupled with the heavy exercise / raised blood pressure and raised body temperature is what does it.

I still think the answer is less more often to build up the fitness. it may take slightly longer but is safer and more sustainable.

I go through it a lot actually. It really depends on the intensity of the workout. Actually come to think about it - it only happens when I do my running. I do five 800m runs. So when I start breathing heavy and pushing it that when they start going.
