Stealth there is s good rule of thumb If you feel pain stop......not to be confused with "no pain no gain" There is a didfference between pushing yourself and injuring yourself. The main issue is your techniqueas tianlong stated and you can cause injury. I would try elevating your feet couple phone books or even cofee table to increase the resistance with pushups also vary your arm with (wide , shoulder width and close). You could also put phone books under your hands to get a good pec stretch.

If you are really into strength 15mins everyother day is not going to cut it. I do a lot of pushups and they are a good suppliment to teh gym. If you are worried about getting tight or "muscle bould" the key is stretching and alternate some high rep bench to shock and vary the work out ..... When you start weight training just remember just like MA techique is very importatnt.

    good luck

It depends on what kind of pain it is. No pain, no gain refers more to the burning sensation in a working muscle than to actual pain. It's obviously an uncomfortable pain that you are dealing with or you wouldn't be concerned with it. I would advise that you either switch the way that you do your pushups or rep out on 2 handed pushups.

groppologolgy or whatever, dont' talk. what do u mean "you don't work" ? whats up with that. You're still pushing up the same weight with ur back curved. Yes i am aware that for a normal pushup this is not correct form, but one handers are different. and yes, i know that its easier to do one handers like that because most of the weight is shifted to the shoulders instead of the chest and back. i hate it wehn people go "its easier cause you're not doing anything" the fact is you're still doing one handed pushups, ur only lessening the pain, not "not doing any work"

No. First of all its not that it is just different muscles. It is that you are only doing your upper body weight(and with some assistance from the legs). That is for sissies, your upper body probably weighs less than a third of your full body weight. For one handers the form isn't THAT different. .You simply need to widen your feet to maintain balance. If you want to show off and shit then sure do your bs pushups. If you want REAL power then do it the right way. DON'T LOWER YOUR SHOULDER ON THE WAY DOWN. You have to use a corkscrew type motion. When you go up, again, don't lower the shoulder. That takes away what real work you are doing.
You obviously don't know what your talking about taint. Before you tell people to shut up, learn your shit

actually if read my post i said i do understand taht arching your back makes them easier, but i was saying youre still working muscles even if you do this. and how the hell is showing off? and how are you to know what kind of bs pushups i do? i was only giving advice and you cam along sounding all cocky "thats because youre not doing any work, those are sissy pushups" also i never told you to shutup, i just said don't talk. ok my bad. your right i'm wrong. after doing 15-20 one handed pushups i will NEVER arch my back to ease some of the pain because it hurts. i will not be a sissy and give my back some rest by simply sticking my fat butt in the air so that i can continue doing more reps. let me quote myself

"i do one handers do and most of the time if i stick my butt up into the air to keep my backbent over and high it will lessen some of my pains"

i DID NOT say "arched one handed pushups are better because they are easier and you should only do them with your back up"

i DID SAY this for you smart/open minded people " IF I stick my butt up into the air to keep my backbent over and high, it will lesson some of my pains" doofus, meaning that when you start to feel pain doing one handers the correct way ( the way that grubbopologmonopoly dude says, which is also the way i say they should be done), then start doing those archpushups to rest ur back but still be doing some sort of work for your arms or whatever. but mr. grumpy grubbologowogobougowbuba just HAD to say "thats shit" more or less, and its not, its a good way to take pain off ur back while still working ur upper body, even if its easier and takes off a lot of wieght ur pushing. the end.

a man walks into a doctors office.
The doctor asks him what the problem is...
the man says, "every time I raise my arm it hurts. What can I do to stop the pain."
The doctor says, "stop raising your arm..."

The truth is that one armed pushups are more for show than good. If you want to get a better pushup strap something to your back like a filled backpack, small child or even one of those profesional strap on weights for your chest for added weight. Or get three boxes and set two in the front separated and should width apart while putting the third box where your feet will be. Now do your pushups on the box with your hands on the front boxes going as low as you can in between the two boxes up front. Those are fun. Here is another good workout. Every time you go up change the position of your hands. Start out far apart and move in closer every push and then back out again. Really though, one arm pushups look better than they are. I also heard of someone hurting their elbows from the strain and also their backs. Also throw in some back excersises and don't forget to stretch. Now this concludes this PE lesson for today.

Sorry if I offended you. .But, this is the way I see it. Changing to an easier way=good. Changing to an easier way which isn't really putting you in proper positioning(eg butt in the air)is a bad thing. Changing to an easier way. .LIKE I SAID BEFORE. .Changing to regular push ups...THE RIGHT WAY!! That is a real man. Adapting, but adapting while still pushing the limits.

So let me state this very clearly again for you. I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH DOING AN ADAPTED FORM OF AN EXERCISE. ..As long as it doesn't put undo stress on you and works you out efficiently.
I will bet 25 real regular pushups are better than the however many one handed you do with your "ass in the air". ..trying to resist, so easy to turn into dirty comment No harm intended tainted. . Just don't want you doing anything that is inefficient

But i'm thinking of trying weights now thanks. By the way, is it worth ignoring/blocking out the pain in my back to continue doing the one handed pushups, or will it cause me harm and should i just listen to my body and when it hurts stop.
Listen to your body. You should know enough now to distinguish between a good "sore or tired ache", and muscle strain and damage.

actually grubologoloeybeotydurgodmonopolyhopilyubbo, i'm not offended anymore, i'm sorry i kept barking at you. anway to make myself clear i was trying to say taht after doing my one handers and it starts to hurt i will switch to those arched pushups untill i feelmy back is ready to go normal again. hey it beats just stopping, at least doin this it helps work for endurance and abs. and i wonder if you thought that i ALWAYS do arched one handers, i don't, it was just a suggestion for when u wanna give ur back a break but don't wanna stop pushing up. and ya, i do agree, normal pushups are totally awesomer than one handers for strength. one handers do serve more as a 'test' than anyting else.

you have to face the facts doing push ups with one hand is not exaclly a natural movement and stresses your body in weird ways dont want pain then use two hand

you need to spread your legs very wide to take strain of your back

One-handed pushups in the normal pushup position, without your feet spread out a little? What the hell? How is that even possible? I'm assuming that you'd lose balance and fall over to your side but I guess since someone here can do *cough* 40 or so *cough* then you must be some sort of genius.

You've got some strength there, buddy. Even I'm impressed, let alone the girls.

And yeah, like kh_s I can never do too many one-handers myself. But when it comes to pullups I think I got most of you beat.
