Stealth there is s good rule of thumb If you feel pain stop......not to be confused with "no pain no gain" There is a didfference between pushing yourself and injuring yourself. The main issue is your techniqueas tianlong stated and you can cause injury. I would try elevating your feet couple phone books or even cofee table to increase the resistance with pushups also vary your arm with (wide , shoulder width and close). You could also put phone books under your hands to get a good pec stretch.
If you are really into strength 15mins everyother day is not going to cut it. I do a lot of pushups and they are a good suppliment to teh gym. If you are worried about getting tight or "muscle bould" the key is stretching and alternate some high rep bench to shock and vary the work out ..... When you start weight training just remember just like MA techique is very importatnt.
