  • Weight Lifting....

    Hello,

I lift weights for a few hours (1-3) a day, every day now for 5 months now. I was wondering how many lb. should i stop at to make sure that none of my growth is "stunted" to any degree, since im 14 years old, 5ft 11in, still growing (i think....) Im doing 50 100-200 times the right way (hehe...) over an hour or 2 ....... but want to know if i can do more without having it hurting me in the future! and if i can do more.....how much more ?

Oh yea, and also.......ive heard many places that doing 10 lb 100 times is better then 100 lb 10 times (lifting). Is that thing true?

Bye - Thank you- Hope some one can help!

Well, here's your first problem. Your lifting weights everyday for 1 to 3 hours. Now that would easily be considered overtraining in my book.

In the world of weight lifting sometimes less is more. Try doing a 3 day split where you only work out certain parts of the body once a week, im assuming your working out the whole body considering its taking you 1-3 hours a day. if you need help on getting a split i could help you with that.

I think that saying curling 10lbs 100x is better than curling 100lbs 10x stupid. the only thing your going to be working on while curling it a 100x is your endurance. if your looking to develop your muscles more your going to need more weight than 10lbs.

I dont know a whole lot about weights=stunting of growth, so i cant really answer any questions.

what are you doing "50 100-200 times"?

also what are you wanting to achieve by lifting weights? is it for a martial art?

    -daniel.

Weight training can be a little complicated until you get your head around it.

Lifting a lighter weight more times = strong lean muscles, higher indurance.

Lifting a heavier weight fewer times = bigger "buff" muscles, less endurance.

So it depends if you want to "look" strong, or "be" strong.

Also, I'm not qualified, but I would suspect that the first one, the one going for long, lean muscles would be less damaging to a young skeleton than bulking up with short, fat muscles.

Do you work out at home or in a gym? If you're in a gym, and they're any good, they will have qualified employees who will be able to help you out with your question.

"Lifting a lighter weight more times = strong lean muscles, higher indurance."

          Wrong!

"Lifting a heavier weight fewer times = bigger "buff" muscles, less endurance."

          Wrong!

          "I'm not qualified"

          Right!

ok first of all whats up with all of these 14 year olds haha. Second as far as stunting your growth it will happen when you start lifting heavy weight such as maxing out on your squat. Just don't do them. A quad machine should suffice. I would only lift about three times a week because when you work out everyday it does not give your body sufficient time to repair all the muscle fibers you just tore apart. Three times a week is more than enough and I would alternate your workouts every couple of weeks because this will keep your muscles from adapting and will keep them growing. Next lifitng 10lbs 100 times is just goin to get you tired. Bodybuilders will tell you to lift light and do a lot of reps slowly. Well bodybuilders really are a bunch of genetic freaks who could get by like that but I would take lessons from powerlifters. They will tell you to lift heavy with few reps at your normal pace. This will give you more strength and the muscle will come along with it. You may not look as pretty as a bodybuilder but when you are able to toss one of those pansies around easily it won't matter and the ladies will be taking note. As for endurance you will get that separately by doing some hard cardio. Never forget the cardio man!! All those big muscles won't serve no one if you can barely wipe your own butt and can't run farther than a block without gasping for air.

Heh.... wasnt expecting so much feedback.

Anyways, sounds like heavier weights = better. I guess i will train a "bit" less everyday, but i'll work harder!(Need to for Wrestling.......)

Carter-50 lb. 100-200 times a day , now will cut down to more heavier weights ........ as much as i can fit into one hour.
Thai Bri- thanks for the link
cakegirl- i work out at home, in my garage...thinking about going to a gym (once i get a reply from some employers for a job....)
Derk- Are you 14 years old too?
adacas- i dont know why there are soo many 14 year olds..... well... i found this forum when i was looking for some advice on martial arts, maybe they found it the same way. Heh...i can also run a few miles without gasping for air... i guess that is o.k. cardio for now. So....a standard rep is 12 times right?

Thank you all~ Got to go take my PSAT test heh...

a standard set is 12 reps but here is something you can also try later on. This works great for squats but because your still young and growing squats may not be so good to do. For large muscle groups like your chest, quads etc. do 6-9 reps but real heavy almost to your max doing 3-4 sets. Now you must stretch before and after every set to get all the benefits and also because if you are like me you will get the craziest cramps in your muscles. Your muscles will feel like you took a pocket knife and cut them apart yourself after the first time you do this. Its cool that so many young ones are taking to this site for info. More young minds for Thai Bri to warp. Good luck on your test.
