Good points, man.
Size and strength are important. A dude that can total over 1200 lbs in power lifting would be able to dominate a 13 year old black belt. A 200 lb man would have a serious size advantage over an average sized lady who took SD classes.
Fights are unpredictable though; technique brings speed and power to the game which can even the odds.
Someone said before a big man with good technique vs a smaller man with equal technique, favors the big man all else being equal.
That's the truth.

All other things being equal (skill etc) then yes the bigger man will win. But considering Royce Gracie's recent win over a huge guy at least twice his size goes to prove that size does not win over skill. Of course this is a professional fight but I have managed to get guys at least twice my size off me using BJJ (and I am talking basic BJJ nothing fancy...and we were wrestling in a class) and they are always surprised. And sometimes in a SD situation the ability to surprise your opponent gives you a real advantage.

Competitive lifters don't look as mean or big as bodybuilders, so they must be less capable

Originally posted by HandtoHandNo, it means that Royce's skill was so much greater than his opponent that he was able to overcome the opponent's superior size. A friendly match in the Dojo is a quite a bit different. On the street when your opponent's on the ground you don't get down and join them you; pin and pound, stand and swing, or stomp and/or kick (that's a felony).
You are also making the assumption that a self defence situation is only on the street (it might begin in your home) and begins in a standing position. For some women (and also men) the fight begins on the ground or they find themselves on the ground and as such you can not always "stand and swing". You are right in that if I was standing I would probably not take it to the ground but if I end up there I need to know how to defend myself (which is why BJJ is so great). If I ever found myself in a SD situation (and I hope I never do) then I will use all my skill to do what I can to get out of the situation (including my ability to run away).

Anyways I figure it's time to mention some advantages that little people have;
- A small guy in a violent environment will be forced to fight more often than his large counterpart giving him more experience
- A small guy is more likely to lift weights, and/or train in a fighting style as there's no sheer girth to protect him
- A small person has a lower center of gravity

It all depends; size, strength, skill, aggression, etc.... I watched a match a month ago where a really average built guy with some grappling experience took on this bodybuilder guy with these huge arms. The bodybuilder guy obviously had a strength advantage, so they went at it for quite awhile on the mat, but the grappler dude hung in there, and in the end, made the stronger guy tap.
Granted, this was a friendly match, they weren't trying to seriously hurt each other or anything, but all the big strong guys watching were really impressed and wanted to learn grappling afterwards.
