Wo brrrrr dao
That tells ya enough right there.
Taiwan is bit more progressive, has a little better night life and culturally influenced by Japan and the US, but China is home to some jaw-dropping, detailed and beautiful art works, architecture (and women!).
A good memory...well, its an interesting one...eating stinky tofu!Last edited by Tom Yum; 01-26-2007, 04:35 PM.

I went to China for two weeks in 1995. It was my first trip outside North America. I went with a group of high school students and teachers from my old high school (I had just finished my second year of university). We spent two weeks, travelling from Shanghai to Beijing, stopping in Suzhou, Qufu, Tai'an, and Jinan.
Going to a silk factory in Suzhou and seeing silkworms close up.
Being stuck in traffic in Shanghai.
Going up to the summit of Tai Shan.
The Forbidden City in Beijing.
The Great Wall - truly amazing.

Crowds - not of tourists - but of hawkers trying to sell all kinds of junk souvenirs. You'd get to a point where they've thinned out, usually just where a steep section begins, then you excert yourself climbing it, and as you're recovering at the top they hit you. "Hello T-shirt! Hello-post card! Hello Great Wall back scratcher!"
Another memory - one of the first meals we had as a group had some unidentifiable dishes. One of our group was a Muslim and was concerned that it might be pork. We asked the guide. He looked at it, sniffed it, tasted it and said. "Okay. That is meat!"

Started out at a pretty crowded spot and just kept walking until I got past all the 'renovated' sections and the wall was more or less ruins.
Clamored around said ruins until sundown, hung back there while security folks cleared everyone off for the night, then made my way back to one of the 'guard towers' (sort of enclosed parts), threw down my sleeping bag, took out the baijiu and sausages I had brought and camped out overnight. 'Round about midnight I take a walk around and there's a bright moon and not a soul around for miles but me.
Found a fairly level spot and practiced taijiquan for an hour or so.
I felt cool.
Then I felt cold.
Then I finished the baijiu, and hunkered down in the sleeping bag until morning.

I went to Hong Kong during the summer and had a great time. Only thing that sucked was that I had the runs the last week I was there. I had to go to the bathroom every 15 minutes so it made it hard to appreciate the scenery and such around me.
