  • Fake american " shoalin grandmasters"

Alright, im here to tell my thought about those americans stealing martial arts styles. lets take kenpo for example, or how they say "Shoalin American Kenpo"
aww man shut the *** up..
why does a single change in movement make it a very OWN created style.
i always asked myself why they got the nerves to call it american?? it has a chinese > japanese orgin
i call it lazy people who cant wait to deserve the real title as "grandmaster" and just create an "own" stolen style of asian martial arts

and how about those brasilian ju-jutsu? what in gods name maked it brasilian ?
the only thing of brasilian orgin are the fighters. this doesn't give someone the right calling it brasil, or american, or nordic or whatever

last time i saw a video on youtube of some "american kenpo grandmaster" like he calls himself
i asked him why he has an american flag on background, and why he invents asian culture to his own on a very nice way.
then a few days later i get a message back telling me

would a real "grandmaster" react like this?

    thanks for reading.

Not meant as any hostility towards you Hardball, but Bullshido is hardly the place to get any accurate information. There are more children there passing off opinion as fact than there are here.

99% of them there still think that jujitsu began in Brazil.
99% of them believe that BJJ is combatives.
99% of them get their ideas about martial arts from Van Damme and Tony Jaa movies.

Its basically a circus tent with yin yang symbol on its door.

In Japan you can find people practicing Nihon Kenpo. Yes, the art has a Chinese origin. Should they remove the Japanese flags from their dojo? Drop "Nihon" from the name?

Should people who practice Greco-Roman wrestling only display Greek/Italian flags?

Yes, there are people out there who get their black belts through correspondence courses and then market themselves as grandmasters. There are also those who earn the title through sheer hard work and dedication to their art.

Why don't you post the youtube video in question and let us decide for ourselves?

As for "stealing" styles, a famous American grandmaster once said "absorb what is useful, reject what is useless, add what is specifically your own."

Yea, but they do call a lot of people out on their B.S.

I trained Nihon Kenpo for a year or so. It was fun.

I can say with all certainty that you don't know anything about Bullshido. Some of the most well-spoken and informed individuals I know of post there regularly.

You spelled it wrong. Either way, you spelled it wrong. And I know of no-one that actually thinks that.

You're right, it's more the other way around. But once again, I know of no-one that actually thinks that. There are quite a few regular posters that are in the military, why don't you go talk to them?

...I'm having a really hard time not swearing right now, this statement is that ignorant. As a general rule, most people there HATE Van Damme, and I've heard mixed opinions on Jaa. And for goodness sake, 99% of people that have worthwhile opinions got theirs from their own personal experience with a wider variety of martial arts than most realize (or, to some degree, are willing to accept).

...that just don't even make sense. If anything, it's a gym with an extended middle finger on the door and a sign that says "Have you had your Gong Sau today?".

Really man, I don't see why Bullshido has such a bad rep in so many other martial arts forums. All they're gonna do is ask for everyone to back up their claims. And swear while they do it, grow up and get over it.

Edit: WAIT A SECOND, TENTS DON'T HAVE DOORS!

But can't even ridiculous little clowns be taught new tricks?

How about an intro instead of just coming in attacking established members and joining up with the mongrel Jubarki. Which is ironic since Jubarki is proof that the answer to your question is yes seeing as KOTF has recently trained Jubarki to roll over and beg for attention.

no, kenpo was transferred from china to okinawa, okinawa changed the style, which was later okinawan karate in okinawa

okinawa changed the style on their OWN way. with most own techniques and disipline.. i cant say that of most western countries

and no, im not a retarted asian trying to protect its culture. im dutch btw

THE GUY WAS BRUCE LEE! He was no "grandmaster"! He rejected the idea of mastery of a style because that implies that you have reached your limit when actually there is no limit to improvement

That's what he would have said. But we do refer to him as Sijo, or Sigong.

My point was less about titles, more about blending and borrowing.
