  • Learning weapons is important & can come in handy spacially in countries like the Philippines, Indonesia or Malaysia. Many people still use bolo or machete. In NCK short weapons like 13 steel knuckle, 9 sectional whip. long sword, broadsword, single saber, double saber, double short sword, double sai, double kwai(baton), double hook & double butterfly blade & double short spear.

All these short weapons are very practical to augment one`s self defense against an attacker arm with a bolo, sticks, baseball bats, samurai or machete.

The double short spear is almost identical to arnis double stick.

    • My favorites weapons are the butterfly knives (illegal in California, duh!) and the short trisulas (sai in Japanese). These weapons are very good for defense against armed opponents for me.

However, I will get more training in a long weapon this time. I am always interested in the Guan Dao .

Krys, could you attach a picture of a bolo. TIA.

      • Unfortunately I don't have a picture of my bolos, I stay in the UK right now and most of my stuff isn't there... but I still have my krisses in my flat...
The filipino kriss is very long, it isn't a dagger but a sword used mostly for slashing (although one can also thrust with it).
My favorite is the filipino barong: the one I have in the Philippines has a fish design... I didn't want to bring it to Europe because it may be confiscated at the airport.

For bolos have a look at:

And for some muslim filipino weapons used in silat, kuntao and arnis: http://home.earthlink.net/~federicom...o/gallery.html

Train in a long weapon that is suited for your strength, speed & physical abilities. Train in real weapons not the wu shu weapons that are made of tin. Train for real fighting situations. Usually big heavy weapons like guandao, mountain trident & battle axe are for big strong people. Spears, horse cutting knife are for agile.

I have a tandao made by a bolo blacksmith years ago, very sharp.

Shervinc you need to learn the stick(s), bolo-knive first before other fancy arnis weapons....
if somebody attacks you in Iloilo he is more likely to use a knive-bolo-stick, so you need to study those... If you ever come to Manila and want to learn I can tell you were you could look for...
One of my arnis instructors is also a Tai Chi master, and his main martial art is kuntao (this one is a mix of Bagua and Arnis) but he won't teach it to me yet.... ...
            ok, i'll review it.......

my instructor also said that there is, but he prefers Southern Eagle Claw(3finger grab) instead of Northern Eagle Claw(5finger grab)

according to my instructor..... When it comes to a powerful Clawer - Southern Eagles Claw claws powerful compare to NorthernEagleClaw, Tiger, Dragon.......

            • Actually I don't like to train with sticks anymore... but you really need to do it when you start arnis to avoid injuring yourself and you partners...

What I use instead are wooden or unsharpened swords (when training-sparring with other peoples) and real swords when I'm alone. One thing you have to do once you master the basic movements is to practice cutting....you are lucky enough to have banana trees around, use them for cutting because they offer the same degree of resistance than a human body and you will get the proper mechanics....

One of my guros was a personal students of this chinese northern eagle claw master... he showed me northern eagle claw arm smashing exercises and they were pretty interresting, even if he has thin arms he inflicted me great pain although I was already used to arm smashing .... what he said is you should use dit da jow after arm smashing to avoid later injuries... If you want to know there is also a good natural boxing master (speaks only chinese) and a Hsing I master in Manila ...

Another way is once you have learn the mechanics or forms of a weapon start training in actual slashing, cutting & thrusting or stabbing on a wooden log it doesn`t have to be a tree. Me, i don`t like hitting a live tree.

Then try training with a piece of pipe that weigh maybe 5 lbs. or higher. This way you get to strengthen your wrist, shoulder, arm & forearm.

The use of di dat jo or any anti-bruising ointment after forearm smashing drill is to prevent any internal blood clotting cause by injured or dead cells by improving blood circulation. And in that process old injured cells are replaced with newer & stronger cells.

                • I don't see any problems with slashing a log but wouldn't be stabing or thrusting it be impractical? Another alternative could be to take car tyres..

Yes practicing with pipes on tyre is very good to strenghten your arms and to developp speed and power... it is a fundamental exercise of Arnis.

Thanks for the info on Dit Da Jow.....

Stabing or thrusting can develop your focus & targetting as well as your penetrating power or technique without breaking your weapon or hurting your wrist.

its just gonna cost your weapon, you will need to keep sharpenning it or it might break too if you train improperly.

You notice how soldiers train the bayonet thrust, same principle it is to get the rythm & technique of proper thrusting.

                    • You can get the "Zheng Gu Sui" ointment in any Chinese medicine stores around the world. It is not expensive and working well.

I practice stabing and thrusting but on softer targets.... it is important to do so because once you stabed somebody there is a chance your weapon may be suck in... it can also be traped between bones and you need to know how to pull it out. I found that banana trees and animal carcasses do the job quite well, the problem is they are not always available.... I think that this will be difficult and your weapon may get damaged if it is only training quality with a log of hard wood. But I will give it a try...

Shervinc the natural boxing I mean is Yi Chuan (also sometimes called Da Cheng Chuan, forgive the spelling). It is the quickest internal chinese martial art to learn: first you practice the 7 postures (developpong power, rooting..), then how to express forces while moving , after that pushing hand and finally combat...

Is this "Zheng Gu Sui" only used for healing purposes or can it also be used to reinforce your hands-fists? I was told that if you put your hands in a Dit Da Jow jar 3-5 minutes a day it will have this effect...

                            Thanks.

Try using a plywood a 1/8, 1/2 or maybe a dry wall. If you can penetrate a plywood penetrating a human body should be no problem & that include smashing thrugh bones.

The zheng gu sui is use for healing bruises, spraines & dislocation of bone joint. it should have the same effect with dit da jow. Since dead or bruise cells will regenerate with the help of this ointments should make it stronger.

But there are stronger herbs that are mainly formulated for serious bones & nerve injuries.

So, who is going to the conference this year? I have it on good authority that it is definitely in Quanzhou this year, not Australia.

I am planning to go this year, but it will depend on whether I can get away from work for a few weeks.
