Nope.We learn jabs, cross, shin kicks, knee kicks etc.but there is no set order in shadow boxing,we make our own combos.

If you don't like kata, great. I'm not a fan of it myself, but it would be foolish and shortsited of me to think it is totally useless. By thinking that it is completely beneath you, you give yourself 0% chance of learning anything new.

Like I said before I did karate for several years so learning katas would not be learning something new, been there done that and don't care to do it any more.I know all my Goju Ryu katas up to ni dan(second degree black belt).I was supposed to test for my 3rd degree black belt but quit just before the test because I wanted to try something else, something more competitive and something with full contact. So I am someone who is always willing to learn something new.I've done karate, submission wrestling, muay thai, and pankration.

I'm not saying don't do katas, because it's for some people and not for others like myself, however if you do katas don't claim it to be self-defense and more realistic then MT because it isn't.See katas as an art form, just as ballet is a form of art that also has set movements of course they're not called katas but it can be sort of looked at in same way.Katas are more of a way of expressing oneself at least that is how I see it.

I think that's where u are missing the point. No one is claiming katas to be self defense.

                              • Claiming to beat or even really beating someone from any style does not invalidate that style.

If I beat Royce Gracie (in my dreams) it does not mean that BBJ therefore sucks. I just beat Gracie. Hooray hooray applause for me and put me in a magazine cover but that won't mean anything else except that I bettered Royce. But it does not even mean I'm better than Royce. So even Sakuraba in his winning isn't necessarily better. He just won and let's leave it a that.

So you beat a Taichi guy. Great! Applause applause. Does taichi suck? Ummm... i'll keep my mouth shut lest a taichi guy beat me for my arrogance.

Taichi is valid in its own right. Of course anyone worth his salt will not fight using taichi in ultra slow motion. And neither will anyone use taichi in picture perfectness all the time. I beleive that they know just do it as much as we do and know the realities of combat as much as we do. Does Muay thai have a monopoly on striking? It could be the deadliest art (hypothetically speaking) but if the figthers are arrogant and believe their own legend that would be their own undoing.

Taichi people don't live in a vacuum. They are aware that Muy Thai is heavy on striking and conditioning. You don't think they have thought of applying their art against that as well? Well some maybe hard headed and traditional but a practioner can also be practical.

Case in point. In the Philippines we also have MMA tournaments. A Wushu team joined. Wushu right those ribbon spinning sissies?....WRONG. The wushu guy beat a kick boxer by (are you ready for this) using GROUND AND POUND! (Wait that's not a wushu technique!) He knew his opponent was ready to strike, but the opponent didn't know the wushu guy was ready to go to the ground. He may have crosstrained or picked it up two days ago but what they hey, people adapt.

Taichi is useful for combat in the right hands, in the right mind. But for most it's a waste of time.

Just as muay thai is not for everyone. Not everyone can take the rigorous training but it doesn't make the others wussies. I beat a black belt in karate when I was a white belt in judo (he was new to the dojo). Did that make him a bad martial artist? No. He was just new to judo. Had i fought with kicks and punches he might have showed me a thing or two.

Just respect for everyone else's opinions is all we ask. If we wan't to argue lets do it intelligently. I assume that we are intelligent enough here...I could be wrong you know.
