  • Sayoc Kali system or close equivalent

Hello to all in the Filipino forum.
Having found out about the excellent Sayoc Kali system I wanted to ask if there was a similar or equivalent Kali system being taught in the UK.

It looks as though there is no Sayoc Kali in the UK whatsoever so wondered about other knife orientated Kali systems.

I discovered that the Sayoc organisation are VERY expensive in the US, they charge $300 per hour for private tuition!!, this is way too much imo.
Anyway, the system does look to be seriously good for knife fighting/defense and I would be very keen to find a teacher of Kali for private lessons.

If anyone knows of an instructor or Kali school/club I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.
    thank you

Just curious why you'd wanna join a Sayoc 'tribe'? Most in the US take themselves way too seriously.

      Isn't Remy Presas around UK?

Have you checked out Doce Pares?

Another tool to check out would be the FMA Database .

        I (heart) sayoc.
but...I also (heart) Dekiti (yeah yeah, let's not turn this into a lineage thing) and Pekiti Tirsia/ Leo Gaje's system. Inosanto blend is also always good, and incorporates many other systems under one big umbrella block.

well firstly, thank you for your replies guys, this is greatly appreciated. Now to answer your points.

Crucible, Krishna Godhania, I will do a google on his name and that will hopefully yield something, do you by any chance have any site that you know of or could direct me to?.

rapidpanda, hi, there is no 'absolute' reason other than Sayoc was recommended to me on defend.net in my wanting to learn sword thread, so i looked into it and did a lot of reading, I am very impressed with the approach taken by that group/system and it makes a lot of sense to me. This having been said, I am still perfectly open minded to any good, effective knife fighting system so long as it trains in a modern realistic way, I particularly liked the way in which the Sayoc group, drill & spar and the various types of 'conditioned response' and probing 'reflexive response' training aspect between feeder & receiver. Basically I read and read until the early hours of this morning also downloading clips and was so impressed, especially in view of the fact that there are guys who are ex Navy Seals instructing.

Remy Presas and Doce Pares??, again, I will do a search for these names, if you have any further contact info or web urls, then great, I would really appreciate it as I am perfectly serious and would make a serious student.

Garland, I am not quite sure what you mean by the 'heart' stuff but I will do searches for the systems you mention, remember I am in the UK and it is not very good here for so many systems (that I know of anyway), but then this is the very first time I have looked into FMAs.

Once again, thank you for your guidance all.

Just as a warning from what I have heard.. Sayoc Kali is Kali but only emphasizing knife, and also in the majority of basics you learn several grips and transitions between grips.

'conditioned response' and probing 'reflexive response'
This is from my perspective mostly Hubad training but only with a knife.

Hubad could be equated to Wing Chun's Chi Sau training but usually you learn it from an entering position not from a predefined close range only starting point.

Doce Pares includes everything from single to double stick, knife, stick and knife, hand to hand, and empty hand against weapon carrying. Later you might even get into the Kerambit and the machete. You'll also get into stick grappling if your teacher happens to know it. That stuff can get extremely mean and efficient.

You can see some examples of stick grappling in the recent Black Belt mag with Chuck Norris on the cover. Chris Petrilli is the focus of the article and you can see some of the things I learn at my school. My teacher is I believe a 5th Degree in Chris's system.

Nice drills. We do those at my school too. Very fun especially when you are surrounded by knife wielding peers.

We do a man in the middle approach to this kind of drill and disarm in rapid succession.

                  Hello Everyone,

Many people have alot of mistaken impressions about what Sayoc Kali is or isn't, or how much it costs or doesn't. I normaly teach at $50.0/hr(school members) or $75.0/hr (non members), and I easily fill all my available timeslots during a month of practice. Most other Sayoc Instructors have similar rates, some more or some less.

As for drills, Sayoc Kali does employ drills to stimulate the student into a state of understanding the potential of an armed attack. The drills are taught not so much in a counter for counter fashion, but with a definite purpose of the "feeder" taking control of the situation. There are many other aspects covered withing the totality of Sayoc Fighting System, one aspect is the stick currently being reintroduced to those who are not familiar with it, as well there are isolated applications from the drills, counters to locking and disarming, projectiles within a drill, multiple opponent scenarios, team work drills, awareness , medical management, conditioning exercises, blade manipulation, holstering and deployment work, whip and flexible weapons....and this list can go on an on.

RapidPanda, Tuhon Sayoc is also a friend of the Canete family, whom do you study with?

                    Try

Before you say that Sayoc is blade only, look deeper into it. The Sayoc Fighting System cover far more than blades. Blade work is however at the heart of it. Also curious about the comment "they take themselves to seriously." Any time you train with a blade you should take it serious.

Don't take my opinion as paramount it is just from what i've heard is that they take themselves way to seriously. Remember I'm just expressing an opinion and not everyone will be kind to your style. I like it for the most part but it's not revolutionary. Next time I'll bow to the Sayoc triblemen.

Don't worry your customer base won't dwindle cause of what a guy says on a forum. Also 50/hr is not a good deal or in my opinion cheap. I know your life isn't cheap but I could get a gun faster than paying for those private lessons to learn how to use a knife.

                      Also the comment:
Any time you train with a blade you should take it serious.
Is assuming I don't take it seriously but from what i've heard some Sayoc guys just take it to that extra level that doesn't need to be traversed. I take learning to defend my life very seriously and to think otherwise would be a poor prejudgement.

It just seems that people hype up Sayoc Kali more so as a revolutionary style that is far superior than the rest of Kali, but in all actuality it limits itself more so than almost all Kali variants.

                        Gotta try it

I had heard different things about it myself before trying it. I try not to form opinions before I try something. I went in with an open mind and was pleased with what I learned. I worked with some people during my time in the military that have used it. All I can say is it works. Revolutionary? Probably not. Useful, you bet.
No ill intent here was just curious as to why you made the comment about taking it serious. Was just surfing around and saw this place to check it out. Interesting things and comments here. Like you said, everyone has an opinion and should express it.

                        Yall be carefull....

Good man. I admit you gotta try it before you buy it kinda deal, but usually can't justify that kind of cash. I currently take Doce Pares kali which is one of the styles that influenced Chris Sayoc I believe. Kali is kali if you get the right teacher.

Glad you found a good teacher since sometimes they are hard to find.

                            Thanks

Good teacher is an understatement. We study far more than just Sayoc. But,,, we do get some of the Tuhons in the system at the school and untill you have had Tuhon Tom show you the love, you really cant appreciate just how a joint lock can feel when applied with the stick. I have studied several different styles and have found a home with my school.

                            Enjoy....
