As per Greco Roman techniques, you should check out some of our SAYOC DVDs. It goes beyond the second stage of entry and pummeling range and shows some possibilities that can happen in that close quarter range.

was there a sayoc DVD in paticular you where refering to? Which one? Are you saying there are greco roman type techniques in the close quarter range of sayoc kali? Or where you refering to something else when you wrote about some of the possibilities that can occur in close quarter range?

Tuhon Tom Keir (SP??) was a world-class Greco guy. Ricco Chiparelli and the guys over at Raw knew who he was before the first time he showed up at a Gathering of the Pack with the Dog Brothers (He reportedly dislocated Eric Knaus' knee when they fell out of bounds during their match).

Can anyone post something about Tom Keir's greco background? I'd be interested in learning more. Thank you.

It sounds like your doing good work, keep it up. I recomend you check out Karl Tanswell and Jerry Wetzel's material, though. Their development has definetly been along similar lines as yours, and I think most who find out about your material will probably have crossed theirs first. You should definetly see what else is on the market, to see what other, similar R&D has turned up and to aquaint yourself with others who are likeminded in their POV. Just my two cents.

Crucible: You will want to see the upcoming Sayoc Fighting Systems-Stickgrappling DVD, that one will particularly highlight grappling material. For more on Tuhon Kier's background, you should post a question to him on the Sayoc Forum as he does not frequent this forum.(and it is always better to get it straight from the person in question)

There have been several new blade/counter blade systems hitting the martial arts venues lately, all have things that are good, and I highly recommend you check them all out. In Sayoc Kali, Phase 2 material is what many of these programs are teaching, this is where the Receiver is turning the attack back to the Feeder, in order to regain the Feeder role. There was a great session taught at the 2004 Sama Sama on just this material.

crucible, i have contacted Krishna Godhania in the UK and am waiting to hear back from him, the only problem is that he is in a place called Warwick, which is well out of the way and very difficult logistically.

If anyone else knows of instructors in the UK (sth east or London), it would be greatly appreciated to hear from you.

FMA instructors? Or Sayoc? There's alot of FMA in the UK. You'd have to check with Airyu or Krishna to see if there's anyone else in the UK for Sayoc.

Ya, I'm basicly asking if your requesting info pertaining to any style or system of Filipino martial arts(FMA) or specificly sayoc kali.

info on any effective FMA would be great for me, no, I am not hooked into only one particular style.
The essential criteria for me is as follows:-

Edged weapons
Stick/s
Realistic training style (suitable for modern day street/bar/any public place where disorder could occur)

An element of contact/sparring (as full on as can be)

also an element of unarmed basic takedowns/throws/locks/sweeps as I am very interested to see the FMA approach to these type of techniques as i have heard that the FMAs tend to take a simple no nonsense and direct approach, (this as opposed to Jujutsu for example, where quite a lot of techniques are fairly complicated)

I heard someone make the comment that some of the FMAs are basically "in your face streetfighting", this is the type of style that I want to explore and learn.

Two Hand Grip?

I have to question the statement that a two hand grip is essential. If you have both of your hands on my one blade, then I have another hand free to do other things. Why tie up both hands? I am not saying this is wrong but would like to know why you feel that this approach is essential.

Hi All,

Krishna is hosting Tuhon Tom Keir this year, but at £100 for two days with a top instructor, not even the top man, its simply too expensive to find out if the system is good/excellent/public relations hype.

If you were to travel to Rick Youngs in Edinburgh you could train with Guro Dan Inosanto for less (usually about £75 for the weekend), or about £100 at Bob Breens in London.

I host my GM (9th degree Black Belt, Danny Guba) twice a year (starting this year) and charge £45 for two days. I have spoken to other instructors who have made it clear that until the price drops, then Sayoc kali is not on their wish list.

It appears (sticking my neck out here, but hey-ho!) that the high cost of the system is due in part to the useage of the system in the Tommy Lee Jones film The Hunted. If its appeared in a major although not particularly successful) Hollywood movie, it must be good, therefore put the price up.

It seems to me that the best way to get you system known is to price it reasonably; this means class, private and seminar prices which are within the reach of the majority of martial artists, not just the few who can afford it. I realise that there will always be those who think that paying through the nose means top quality instruction; it doesn't, it means being able to boast that you have more spare cash than sense.

In Sayoc kali, as advertised, I see a highly evolved use of marketing techniques, and a desire to appeal to a certain sector of the market. Does this mean that the system is no good? Nope, just aimed at certain people.

I find it interesting that some people complain about the price of "not even the top man" for a Tuhon Tom seminar. I have had a few seminars with Tuhon Tom and I have found it to be worth every penny of it. Am I biased because I am in Sayoc? Maybe. All I can say is that I have tried several other arts, and still study in the FMA, and I now find Sayoc working its way into all I do. Expensive because of a movie? I dont think that is whats at the heart of it. Maybe being more selective in the people they train.
I will complain about not receiving instruction from the top man, in this case Tuhon Sayoc, only when I feel that I have learned all that I can from every person under him. To be honest, I dont see that ever happening.
So if you complain about it not being Tuhon Sayoc but you have never had lesson one, something is wrong with that picutre.
Just my two cents and maybe a little more.

flat out Tuhon Tom can do the damn thing. He was apart of the movie the Hunted.
He and Tuhon Raf. Helped with the story line. As for the price he is one of a few instructor that will put it on the line. He real down to earth, and very knowledgeable. I'm sure if you don't find him to you're liken he would refund your dough. That's the kind of Guy he his. You have to see the man to see the Man.
