we also hold the view that against a skilled attacker with a knife and when you are e

I was a prison officer for 8 years .I have had 2 prisoners try to stab me with sharpened toothbrushes,I was able to disarm them.I have friends who were not so lucky.
I agree that against a skilled knife attacker your as good as dead,
and also against an untraind attacker. My sensei is a knife fighting nut, he loves his knife work and so do i.I'm retired ,i'm 33 so i spend most of my free time at the DOJO,when we get free time my sensei and i spend hours knife fighting.Trained or untrained, unless you have gun and your out of the throwing rotation of my knife, you are going to die.

Have that midset and you will die....like a girl! You were a CO. You must know the rules of the jungle. If you have the will to survive you will. The knife is just a tool. As with a gun, which can jam by the way. Take out the person using the tool. Period. Most knife nuts are just that...nuts. To survive you have to attack and take your attacker out. Thats it. Its not all that hard. But you first have to have the right mindset. Skilled or unskilled, you will not die if the guy with the knife dies first! Ed

There are only three possible outcomes to a knife confrontation:

        1. You Die He Dies
        2. You Die He Lives
        3. You Live He Dies

If you both live then there was not a knife confrontation or intent.

You have a 1 in 3 chance of life. This does not guarantee a lack of permanent injury.

This is a realistic 33% chance to survive. IF YOU ARE TRAINING! And skilled.

I wouldn't risk my job for a 66% chance of being fired.

          best defense

In a knife situation if I can I will run. If I can't I figure I have to come to terms with the fact that I am going to get cut and I want to try and minimize it while inflicting the most damage. If I get cut but can run away as a result great - I am alive. I would rather take one in the arm while kneeing an attacker in the groin then risk a knife to the body. I can live without the arm! Anyone pulling a knife is either totally stupid or totally off their rocker so I flat out prefer to take off as soon as possible. I doubt this will change no matter how many years of training that I get.

Again wrong midset. I like to have 100 % chance of survival. Big difference than 33% chance of survival. There is going to be one outcome.I win! Get my point. Stop thinking about what ifs. You are faced with someone who wants to hurt you bad and maybe kill you. What are you going to do? Run oh yeah thats a good one if you can. What if you are with your wife and kids, friends, coworker. Let them take the knife for you? You win there is no other option ok well die then sissy girl.
There are no odds except the one that you create.Ed

              good point

I get your point. And if you happen to be wrong then you'll never know it anyway (dead men don't speak). But I'll tell you a story that may answer why you don't pull a knife to intimidate.

My stupid older brother was having a party at my parents house when we were late teens and the folks were away. There was a local tough guy there and he was getting a bit out of control. At some point, to get the guy to leave, my older brother pulled a carving knnife out of the drawer and waved it in the guys face. Give the guy credit for balls - he leaned over and grabbed the blade in the middle! My brother pulled it away in shock (cutting the guys hand pretty bad) but in his shock he didn't notice the guy lean over again and deliver to my brother a head butt on the bridge of his nose that put him out. My brother was lucky to live through that one. I don't think you can anticipate how you will react in these situations so pulling knives for show is asking for trouble you don't need.

Wives and kids can run too. All you have to do is be sure to stay between the attacker and the family. Most people who will attack you are probably trying to rob you and you should give them your money, and run. Who cares what the thief thinks. " Man I sure showed that guy and his family that I could kill them."

No kidding, anyone can kill anyone. I can kill too.

There is a simple rule in life to follow:

"any man can beat any man on any given day."

The outcome is unknown. Training only increases your odds of survival not triumph. Training is also knowing when to fight and when to run. If you run with your family then all or some may survive. If you turn and fight, someone, hopefully the attacker, will die. If you die, who is left to ensure that your family is safe and provided for in the years to come. How could you be sure that the attacker would give chase? If he is attacking you, he is probably looking for something easy. Hence, the no job, and attacking people Junk that he is doing.

I will give you an agreement on one note:
There are some times to fight, and if it is time, I will.
There are more occasions to escape.

The ultimate goal is survival. Running is survival sometimes. That would mean that running is a win too.

Surviving a knife fight is winning, by any means.

"Every day spent training is one day closer to learning something"

Knife training is a scary thing when you realize that every time that trainer touches your skin that there would be a decent amount of blood drawn had it been real. That being said I would hate to go against an attacker with a blade if I had no weapon. Personally, I think I have trained hard enough that my chances for survival are much higher than those of the general population but it is not something I would ever wish to try out. I started training in Kali (a modified Sayoc version) after I met a couple of felons who taught it. To be perfectly honest it bothered me knowing that there were people like that on the street that were so damn good with the blade. So, the next day I started training, and it has consumed my life since. On the carry subject, I always carry; living in Florida there are very few restrictions. On the using a blade against an unarmed attacker, as long as there are two or more of them jumping me, I'd use it without hesitation. To use the old cliche it's better to be tried by twelve then carried by six. Any of you whom have ever been straight out attacked by multiple people probably feel the same way. Oh well, just my two cents.

I have done a bit of knife training and I find that the basic key to it all is to be extremely aggressive. Either be extremely agressive in closing with the attacker (or staying out of his range. you either need to be VERY close or far away to stay out of his ideal range. that or have VERY quick reflexes. Keep in mind a knife wielding pesron can clear 21 feet in about 1.5 seconds and cut you if properly motivated.), gaining control of the weapon, or more likely, the arm that holds it (its a bigger target), and aggessively incapacitiating your attacker. That or be extremely aggressive in running away. A knife attack/assault is a fight in which at least one of the participants has made it clear that he or she intends to seriously maim or kill the other and needs to be dealt with as such.

I'd avoid getting too close while my opponent has a knive...... don't forget he can pull another, punch, kick, sweep.... while all your attention will be on his knive....

I won't go for short range if I can avoid it as long as my opponent has a knive, maybe step in once to catch the knife hand, then quickly back to long range, shifting positions while pulling and breaking his balance in order to prevent him from using other weapons or kicks.....

If I can't get his weapons after 5-6 attempts and I'm still alive I'll follow my GMs advice and run...
                              just my two cents.

                                Terry,

Good question. When you live in a country where violence is not an ordinary, everyday occurance and the legal system will kill faster than any street combat, you don't get into many altercations. And that's where the myths begin. Add all the movies and TV shows subsituting for reality lack of personal reality on it and there you go. If you have been taught by someone who hasn't had the experience of street fights and knife fights (as I was by my 2nd and 3rd karate instructors) then you get taught interesting defenses against knives...all of which will get you hurt.

                                Yours,
