        The Rickson Gracie Fight
In 1993 at the U.S. Sambo Championships in Norman, Oklahoma, undefeated Rickson Gracie with over 300 straight victories, was matched with multiple Judo and Sambo champion Dr. Ron Tripp. The 6 feet 205 pound Tripp threw the 5 feet 8 inch. 185 pound Gracie to the canvas by "Uchimata" in 47 seconds and Gracie's shoulders touched the floor, thus giving Tripp "absolute" victory under U.S. Sambo rules. Rickson complained that he didn't understand the rules, because if he did, he would never have let himself been thrown. However, the results stood and a rematch never happened. Thus, officially, Dr. Ron Tripp became the only fighter in Rickson Gracie's legendary career to defeat him.

No, pinned. I guarantee you, that if that match was allowed to continue(but was stopped cause of a pin), Dr. Ron Tripp would have been tapping out at least(or at most) 3 minutes later.

you miss the point JR Remove the mats and your boy would have died or been KO'ed for about a week from the throw...if we are playing the IF game in the street yer boy DIED...thats the point to the throw, they hurt people...the gracies removed them because they were too dangerous to train...hehehehe...too bad for them the rest of the world didnt follow suit. The thing they lack is the ability to PUT the opponent on the ground...they aint EVER had a problem finding themselves on the ground.

i KNEW you were going to bring up the reality of the streets on this one ... This was a SPORTING event, not a live or death fight.
Youre certain Rickson would have got KO'd or gone comatose from that throw? You guys are just so sure that would've happened. I seriously doubt it, and if their match was on the cement, do you think Rickson would have allowed Tripp to lift him...and an Uchimata is a hip throw if im not mistaken...so its not like Rickson would have landed on his skull, but right on his back, on the ground.....where Tripp would(im certain) get submitted.

What other sporting MA doesnt? In fact they prefer the least rules, actually no rules...

Whatever, so what the Gracies' techniques are most effective in sport fights, its not like all those techniques cannot be applied effectively for self defense.

Really? All of them? Explain the flying armbar and buttscoot for SD for me.

That's because they dont know what fun is Seeing as they thought judo throws were too dangerous to train, imagine how they must feel about knives

                              you guys know whats funny?

Rickson's father Hélio Gracie stated in an interview that "If you count all fights like everybody else does, including Rickson, who says he has 400 fights; if you count like that, I have a million." - wickipedia

from now on im gonna be like rickson, and count every randori and sparring match as a "fight" and whenever i lose to somene i wil simply decide not include the loss in my record, just like benny the jet did when he got beaten in thailand by a thai boxer.

Whoa.. this thread kinda ran away from me....

Tanto, I wasnt just owning whitebelts in Judo Newaza, I was owning all the way up to blue.... and I got tapped once to a muscled straight armbar from the half gaurd (using his arms as the pivot as opposed to his hips). I admit I got caught, but I doubt it would have happened if he didnt have a good 60 pounds on me.

I was rolling with the blacks and browns.

Also BoarSpear said I was "owning" my BJJ instructor after one Judo class. Sorry Boar, wrong again, I said I put him down once, the one technique I pulled off (Tani Otoshi btw). doesnt compare to the amount he pulled off, and very rarely do I see him train standup. You misinterpreted though, he threw me around easier than some of the judoka did (Not just whitebelts). I even attempted the flying armbar (I know its not really L33T FOR THE STREET! applicable, but its fun, sue me).

ACTUALLY, now that I think about it, he's always harping on me to finish after you get the throw, anything like that, because usually you end up with an arm. I tried to take his arm and he armbarred me from the bottom before I could TRY to sit down.

I ended up getting slammed on my back, but didnt get hurt, must be all those breakfalls I learned in BJJ. (I know they came from judo, I know its ukemi, just getting a dig in).

He also doesnt claim to be good at standup.

Then theres the fact, that hes not even the head instructor, hes just a brown belt, and the head instructor could destroy me with his wrestling nevermind any throws he knows. Head instructor teaches the Judo throws, but he favors wrestling more (fights mma too, so maybe thats where it comes from).

You gotta let me reply before you up and decide that with one Judo class I'm killing everyone. (My plan is to take many Judo classes on top of the BJJ and then kill everyone).
