underground street fights

Has anyone her ever heard or witness a underground (or in a basement) fights where there are no rules(just combat) and they fight for money? If so what are your feelings towards these competition.

the reason for me asking is my father is taking me to a street fight competition this weedend. He said they are held in a basement and there is a little money involved. I for one am excited to witness this and at the same time curious. My father seems to believe that I am not street smarts enouph to fight in this compitition, but yet me and him only see each other every couple of month. I have been training for around a year now and am feeling like this would be the ultimate test for my skill, for this is what I train for: no rules, no time limit, just combat. Boxing I cannot use all my tools to my disposal. Its not so much the money its more the experience and answer to the question I believe alot of martial artist ask themselves; will all my training count when it matters and will I be able to exicute under live threat and pressure.

I think you are probably better off entering an organized NHB/MMA competition than entering an underground one. Just think about what could happen if you got really hurt. I highly doubt there will be a physician in attendance or some type of insurance policy in place. Also, I don't mean to pry into your business but your last post sounds like you and your dad have some issues. Almost like you need to prove something to him. If that's true, then that's not a good rationale for entering a competition like that. Just my 2 cents.

I also can't recommend a format that is liable to leave you missing teeth at best. I empathize with wanting to test yourself and your skills but maybe you should consider MMA outlets first and see how that goes.

However, if you go to watch, I wouldn't mind hearing the seamy details here.

no, me and my dad have no issue's and I have nothing to prove to him. I am definately going to watch, even viewing I believe would be benificial.

Just curious what martial arts have you studied? and yes I have competed in those. Actually quite a bit of mma fighters got there start through these competetions.

No the poster about my father was not correct. I have my life and he has his, every now an again we get together and shoot the sh@t and I mentioned I would like to check the fights out and possibly try and he just made the comment that he didn't think I had the street smarts....no biggie. I have been training in jkd with a wing chun base, it has basically only been three people in my class, my sifu, another student and me; which has allowed me to advance rather quickly cause of the personal attention we get. I definately would step up my training considerably before entering and would go to a number of them and check them out first. I just feel that after a few fights that will give me a realistic understanding of what to expect in these situations (what really works and what doesn't).

So you have trained in JKD, and wing chun for one year.
You are entering an underground competition, do you not think it maybe a little bit more wise to go in for a more competition, so you can get use to the adrenaline dump, and things along those lines?


Did the JKD involve any form of ground fighting?

1 year is not a lot of training but you will do what you want to do so if you fight be extremely ready and no what you are getting into I would watch first.

I think it's a stupid idea to get involved with something like that for obvious reasons. I have to admit though I am very curious about it, I have often thought about fighting in one if I ever found one.

Well I got a few pms about these underground fighting things so I think I will answer it here. I have done a few of these, quite a bit with my shaolin instructor, he would have trips to the Phillipines, China, Hawaii, and a few parts of southeast asia. In the Phillipines we ussaully trained with few other artists and once in a while they would go, hey how about a tournament? They would ussually take us out to the woods, use a stick to make a circle in the ground and we would be randomly assigned some person to fight and we would just go. In China there were something called rooftop fights in which we partaked in, matches were also called Gong Sao, talk with hands. We would also have gamblers sometimes bet on it. In Hawaii there was the canefields, people would fight in them and all type of people would come to watch. In the U.S. there was times I did some things in basements. It was not too hard since most were just streetfighters who watched the movies fightclub. Your chances of getting seriously injured depends. Some people will pull the person off once they see you can't take anymore, or the fighter will stop. But some people really just couldn't care. As for me suggessting to do it, probaly try some bar thing.

thanks for the concern and advice. I will definetly watch before I jump in. I think these are more like a fight club sort of thing, but then again you never know what kind of skill the other person could have. I do know that there are no rules unlike the roof top match from the link. I definetly want to go and check out the manner and the atmosphere. Im sure they don't continue to let you beat on the person untill there dead............I think.
