Ok, let's be clear, I wouldn't want to fight that big ass ignorant looking roebuck. That being said, that fight had rules. They boxed. There were no dirty tricks or grappling (probably a good thing because there was tension there and I could see someone pulling a gun at that place). I've seen some huge ass fools challenge BJJ guys with NO rules and get worked. That's one thing. The other thing is, this is why it's STUPID for a normal guy or girl to train in boxing. Boxing is a SPORT and a CONTEST for people who weigh the same amount. Can you imagine some girl who trains in boxing or some 160 pound boxer trying to "fight" or defend themselves from either of those guys? Let this be a lesson that Boxing isn't self-defense. Also, this video is good because you need to imagine yourself in that situation, fighting one of those guys. Do you think how you're training now would work? If not, you need to rethink what you are doing.

Probably. But I wouldn't say "no amount" of training wouldn't help. I've seen guys that look that crazy get beat by BJJ guys in closed door challenges. I've also seen some pretty scrapy guys who are tough as hell and know some dirty tricks who might be able to go with a guy like that. Streetfighters have aggression and experience but they lack skill. You could see it in that video, the guy was a damn monster, but he was sloppy...for whatever that's worth. Hell, even Bob Sapp gets his ass knocked down so anything is possible. It is basically futile, but my point is that people who do "boxing" for self-defense need to wake up.

Atlas, I don't see what point your making re: boxing and self defense as it relates to this situation.
A good boxer with fight exp. as big as that guy would almost certainly have cleaned him out. A big BJJ/MMA guy would also have probably taken him, I don't doubt.
A 170lb boxer might not have fared very well, but that's not a failing of boxing its a fact of life. 170lb grapplers don't fight 300lb graplers, either.

My point is that a 170 pound grappler has a fair chance of choking out or breaking that guys limbs. Not a 100% for sure..but a good chance of causing some damage. A 170 pound boxer would get creamed. Self-defense for people who aren't giants is supposed to give you an advantage in any situation. BJJ would do that. Certain MA's will do that. Boxing won't do that.

Grappling is a situation where a skilled fighter can often defeat an unskilled larger opponent, I've done enough BJJ to have seen it happen. Ive also seen fights end real fast with one guy punching the other in the face.
I think the biggest thing that boxing and other 'ring' styles give to self-defense are the level of comfort with hitting and getting hit. If I decide to sock somebody, I'm pretty sure I can hit them square in the face and then hit them again in short order. Also, I feel that I've been hit enough times to deal with it and not lose my composure.
As for this guy in the video, I'd suggest dealing with him is going to have much more to do with awareness than anything. If he clocks a 170lb guy, that guy is likely to go down regardless of his style. The trick would be seeing the assault coming and avoid or pre-emptively attack.

If the fight had no rules - worse, he'd just kill you.The light skinned guy was swinging pretty wildly, throwing arm punches and not really picking his targets. That slow-mo of him bobbing and weaving shows that he's honed his skills in the sweet science; you don't do it that well without having practiced it before. Plus, he keeps the orthodox stance for the length of the fight - untrained fighters have no stance or loose it under pressure (like the light skinned guy).
He's a black version of Tank Abbot, but with tighter boxing skills improving his chance of connecting. Deadly. Awesome. I don't think any normal person in their right mind would duke it with this guy. Superstrongbig dude + decent technique = MEAN FIGHTIN' MACHINE...that's why weight classes were invented for tha ring sports.

The lighter guy fights more like a typical street fighter - punch is a little off center and a little too much upperbody.

I think a sharp 170lb boxer might be able to hang with the light skinned guy though. If the dark guy could pick his targets that easy, bob/weave and land that left body hook - a lighter and faster boxer could too - ala Roy Jones Jr. vs. John Ruiz (not exactly but you get the idea) - didya notice how the dark guy didn't have to step into the light skinned guy to get the angle when he bobbed off that right haymaker, he was allready off balance - the difference between these guys is boxing skill, the're probably about the same strength wise.
