With all respect to you, anyone who is influenced in their life by something said by a faceless name on the internet, has much larger issues to deal with
do you seek advice here? Yes
are you influenced somewhat in informations we give you here,as long as it makes sense and is backed up by references?Yes you are.At least I am.

about the faceless name on the internet? ill be the judge to discard comments i consider helpless or nonsensical. You shouldnt speak when you're only new to the forum.

we have one of the biggest name in the jeet kune do in this forum right now..--> Tim Tackett

as well as Boxing expert --> Mike Brewer

and what i meant by being influenced is for example:
that when i mentionned that wing chun was effective on the street and worth the training,Thai Bri suggested that I take a look at the Senshido school here in Montreal..which i did,and that opened up my eyes on what street fighting self defense and actually training for it really is all about... how building up your awareness as well as confidence works.he also made me aware of a school that was here in downtown montreal that people travel from to world to attend classes that i wasnt even aware of

after a while you'll be able to judge the faceless names on the internet and youre gonna be able to answer the question ''are they are bullshiters or not?''.

Sure we're here to debate opinions but we are also here to share our knowledge..and my only ''issue'' is wanting to know more.

Martial Arts are not a religion, kid. Don't overdo it.
to me it is,who are you to judge what martial arts are to anyone?

It can be considered a religon.

Martial means of or pertaining to the Roman god of war (and agriculture) *Mars... Of course it's a form of religon!

            White Devil,

You have completely taken me wrong, and it's most likely my wording. I wasn't disagreeing with you. Let me attempt to explain my statement better...

Testbuggie made his initial post, not looking for advice, but a statement at his disappointment in his situation. Everyone then (myself included) started to give him advice, he never asked for to begin with, and seeing as he is new to the forums (as I am) he doesn't know me, or you, or maybe 98% of others posting here, therefore, to him, we're all faceless names on the forums. At this point, Tant01 posted his point of view, and it was opposite of what others felt. Testbuggie allowed Tant01's negative comments to effect him, in a way where he fired back like a cornered animal, and more or less, turned everyone off to his plight, showing he has deeper issues to deal with.

All I was simply saying was, you shouldn't allow a comment on a internet forum, coming from someone you don't know, and possibly will never meet in your life, to have such a negative effect on you, especially when you weren't looking for advice to begin with. That's not healthy in any way! When someone comes on the boards asking for advice, it's different. Even if you don't ask, and advice is given, you absorb it, and think about it. But to react in such a childish and thuggish way that Testbuggie did was a testament to his issues. You can open yourself up, and allow peoples comments to effect you, so you can make the best decision you can, and I'm all for that!

Just because I'm new to posting on the forum, doens't make me new to MA. I've been involved with JKD/FMA for 20+ years of my life (longer then you've been alive,) I know and highly respect people like Tim Tackett and Mike Brewer. My comments were not made to be confrontational. Lecturing me on the "who's who" and telling me I shouldn't speak because I new to posting here seems silly to me. I hadn't realized there was a seniority or hierarchy involved on who should post their comments, and your 135 posts hardly makes you a veteran. It was never my intent to attack you, and I apologize if you took it that way. You we're obviously triggered by my comments, and I hope my longer explanation of my original post clears things up.

You don't want to be judged on your number of posts, yet you judge people on their age when you barely know who they are.I have nothing to prove, i'm just here to learn ,to share my experience and debate martial arts.

now if this is a misunderstanding like you explained, let's shake hands and leave this behind us.

By the way my 136 posts are nothing for the time I've been on this forum.(2003),for your information i listen more than i talk(actually i read more than i write)

probation stopping me from learning jkd

All this bickering over a kid that's on probation for who knows what. An instructor who perceived that JKD could be misused by him. A kid who by his own admission thought JKD would be good for streetfighting. He's never put a foot on the mat and everybody's got their panties in a bunch.

Let him come on here and tell us WHY he wants to train.

Did I miss something here? Arn't you the guy who judged me not knowing who I was? Once again your reading into something much more deeply then needs be. Just because I only registered recently, I to have been "listening" for a very long time. This situation is the exact reason why I lurk a lot, and not post.

You took offense to a comment that WASN'T EVEN DIRECTED AT YOU, and you attacked me for it. I responded to it in a polite manner, and yet you still point the finger at me, about judging you on your age, which I NEVER did. I pointed out a fact to defend my position. You assumed I knew nothing being the new guy here, and should just keep quiet because I don't have your forum credentials.

Your length of time registered on a forum, or how many posts you have does not define you, your actions do, and attempting to "bully" the "new" guy because you don't like what was said, and acting like you're the authority here, doesn't gain much in the respect department.

Anyway, there's no need to keep this building, when there's nothing to build on. I have no sour feelings, this is not a fight, hell, it's not even a disagreement about anything substantial. I'm sure we'll argue about more important topics in the future. I take it all very light heartedly, and enjoy the debate. That's all.

                  Peace on your journey!

I know I'm just jumping in hear, but, i'll through my two cents in. We don't know what the guy was on probation for. Was he busted for a joint or for taking a swing at someone in a bar that looked at him wrong? Did he get busted carrying a weapon to defend himself in a jusristiction that has draconian weapons laws and expects people to be victims, or did ha carch a case of road rage and run someone off the road? The instructor might just be covering his butt and have a blanket rule that no one tied up in the legal system can train w/ him just to cover his butt, legally speaking. It may be a reqirement of his insurance company (instructors pay a lot of money in insurance). It could be that this person's past actions show that he is not a good canidate to learn the martial art he teaches, that he feels a moral responsiblity not to enable a person w/ violent tendancies to become a better trained fighter until he proves that he can control himself.
Pesronally, I have a horrible temper. I'm a typical Scorpio. But, I've trained in one martial art or another on and off since I was 8 and has kept me out of more fights than I've had to use it in, and at times minimize the use of force in violent sitations by using effective techinques (ie: compliance holds vs. striking and kicking a person until they are broken) when the situation warrented it.
It put a lot of things into perspective and taught me that the cause of most fights ( when I say fights, I mean two people having, what is, to one degree or another, a mutually agreed upon violent encounter, not defending one's self from violent attack.) is over stupid s**t than usually envolves a lot of ego, and often, alcohol. Perhaps this guy isn't ready to work on that kind of disipline yet and needs to study thi chi or meditation, and learn to put that ego in check. I don't know the guy. Maybe learning a self defense system will give him a sense of disipline and responsablitity that comes with the knowlege taught in the dojo and would do him a lot of good. The biggest badasses I 've known and trained with, be they top level martial artists, Spec Ops operators, SWAT team members, Riot Control Squad cops etc., are usually easy going, friendly, low key guys. Thats because they are disiplined and have nothing to prove. That's the sort of way of going through life I hope we all are trying to achieve, not just be some baddass fighter goes around kicking ass, just to show he can.

martial arts are martial... as a rule... as in militant, as in violent. You don't create a whole set of kick ass techniques to teach someone valour, prudence and humility.

I don't think your average feudal japanese up-jumped farmer grabbed a spear and started learning how to fight with it to reach inner peace... he had farming for that.

It was probably because he was drafted by the local warlord and would have to kill to feed someone else's hunger for power, and it was probably better or more regular pay/food than being a farmer, or multitude of reasons, but valour, humility, and whatever else didn't play into it.

I would say the same for all them chinese buddhists who had to figure out a way to stop all those dudes who kept raiding their compounds etc and taking their food and possessions.

wake up... martial arts exist for violent reasons only. WHY WOULD I TRY TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO KILL SOMEONE? not because i was trying to be prudent, or trying to be Valiant, or trying to somehow humble myself by showing myself how bad-ass myself was.

Today, I would guess most people take up a martial art for the followign reasons:

                                1. They want to learn how to kick ass to make themselves feel safer (of course doesn't really do a damn thing if your attacker is armed with a gun).

                                2. For fitness - the arts are hard on a body, and that's good for fat-asses such as myself.

                                3. Cuz chicks diggit or its cool (the entire Capoeira class at my gym probably falls under this category... looks real pretty but I have yet to see anyone make contact with anyone else... to each their own).

                                4. Cuz they like learning about fighting, and everything to do with military or martial knowledge (i fall slightly into this category) and have a morbid fascination with people hitting each other.

as for the original poster - people should quit provoking him and then blasting him for being provoked.

                                word.
