OK - all respect indended to Dimebag (RIP), but as far as guitarists go, he'll never be considered a great. Ever. Especially in the same league as Hendrix. As far as technique, you could compare him to people like Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, John Petrucci, Yngwie Malmsteen etc, but it wasn't Hendrix's technique that made him the man, it was his soul and the complete non-conventional way he jammed. Hendrix is interesting in that he's really the only person considered "all that and a bag of patato chips", that is never really disputed by people in the same area. I've only ever heard one guitarist ever say that Hendrix was over rated, and he got the beat down like you wouldn't believe. But yeah, Hendrix is really just the undisputed champ of the modern guitar.

Jimi was (according to media) cutting edge for the day, as was Bruce.
You can't help but wonder how either of them would be regarded 30/40 odd years on after they died?
Would Jimi stand up to Dimebag Darrel of Pantera?
Would Bruce stand up to (insert UFC champion of choice)?
Snapshots in time.
Who knows where we'd be if they hadn't been around?

In light of the kind of acting he did, I find him to have more depth than JC, but you could say JC is mostly always thinking about comedic entertainment values?

I asked how one dead guitar player stood up to another.
Nothing conclusive ever comes out of these comparisons.

I know several guitar players who don't rate Hendrix.
I know several guitar players who could wipe the floor with him blindfolded.
I also defend Hendrix, insisting that they consider the context of what was going on in his 'day and age', which is kind of the way I look at Bruce Lee too.
A lot of it's down to personal taste.
I'm in the music industry btw.

Originally posted by Nips View PostWell, it's difficult because it's not like there's a definitive winner with music, as compared to fighting.
If Bruce Lee got re-incarnated in his prime and fought to the death with no rules against Fedor, the winner would be the winner, and considered the better fighter.
If you re-incarnated Hendrix and got him to have a guitar duel against Joe Satriani, it'd be complete personal opinion on who was the better guitarist. But all in all, if you mean by "could wipe the floor with hendrix", that they could play faster or more showy than him, then as a personal opinion I don't call that better playing.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but Hendrix, as a guitar player, just wasn't 'all that'.
In fact he was pretty shocking.
Nor was he quite the innovator you'd believe, but history has painted him that way.
The term "less is more" comes to mind - David Gilmour never played extremely flashy or technical
Definitely technical.
Yeah well that's it, Hendrix was a pioneer (this is opinion ofcourse), he showed the world what could really be done with the instrument,
Look into Django Reinhardt, Chet Atkins etc prior to him, or more contemporary players like Brian Setzer.
None of whom choked on their own vomit to crystallize their careers.
